I have 2 pairs of 1947 501XX LVC made in San Francisco around 2004 with a blown out pockets. I took them to the tailor shop at the Levis flagship store in San Francisco on Union Square. Behind the counter they have true denim enthusiasts and experienced tailors who can handle just about anything that can come up.
On these two pairs there was a gaping hole in the pocket. The damage was too extensive for a vintage darning machine on its own. These would need a patch. Most alterations people would have simply sewn a rectangular patch over the hole. But the repair guru’s at Levis took selvedge, LVC denim and formed it into the shape of the pocket. They then outlined it in Levis gold thread and darned the edges with a real indigo cotton thread. After some wearing and a wash or two, the raw denim will begin to blend in with the rest of the jean.
