If he were as dumb as a teenager he would live in a kennel.

this dog's bark is infrequent but terrifying.

^^ I could have used an extra kennel. At one point I suggested they might find it "fun" to camp out on my roof deck, but my wife put the kibosh on that pretty quickly.

^ Normally hard to get a bulldog to bark. What's setting her off?

doorbell/knocks at the front door?

just normal play. She'll drop a toy in the yard, I'll pick it up and she'll sit down, wag tail, and give a bark or two until I throw it. Going to curb that behavior though, her bark is deep and it carries, so it'll annoy the neighbors if she learns that that's what she has to do in order to get a toy.

Teach her to bark on command then never give her the command.

good tip. We haven't gotten into any big effort training yet, mostly just letting her acclimate.

we have, however, gotten her into the habit of sitting down at every intersection before we cross. Aside from a few distractions here and there, she has picked it up quickly. When in doubt, a piece of hot dog helps too.

The cattle dog shriek is horrifying.

But in the last few weeks she has started to "spread her wings" a bit. The other night she was gone all night, only showing up around eight in the morning all tore up and tired. One claw is chewed up and oozing a bit, I cleaned it and will see how it goes.
Most nights she barks at all and sundry. I'm not sure what is out there, we joke that it's chipmunks, but there is a bear up here, lions, foxes, deer rabbits bobcats, really a menagerie.

And she has managed to come home stumbling fucked up too. Unsteady on her feet to the point of falling over. I induced vomiting as best I could and called a vet. The only one I could talk to figured it was weed (entirely likely in these parts) and that she would come through OK. She did after some lovely bile vomit and half a days rest.

All in all its fun times for a dog.

If there are bear and lion about, why are you letting your dog out at night? You probably won't have her for long. Or was it a case of an accidental escape?

our pit has gained nearly 10 pounds since intake. We think she'll top out at around 60 lbs.

top right is intake at shelter. The rest are throughout this week.

Somebody has to keep the bears at bay? As far as I know a bear will run from a dog, or at least give it a wide berth. Obviously a bear would shred a dog if it came down to an actual fight but I never hear about dogs being killed by bears.
Lions are another matter and eat dogs from time to time, but I understood that that was usually when the dog was tied up or just a small dog. I know people use Airedales to hunt lions so a lion must give way when confronted with a barking dog. And lions are ambush hunters, I would think that as long as my dog is "on guard" she would smell or hear a lion and start barking.
Maybe I'm being negligent but it seems silly to have a guard dog that can't leave the house. I've got kids and live stock and like having the alarm system.

Oh, and the dog is stoned again. A few more days like this and I'll be packing her off to doggy NA meetings.

Some pictures of Airedales treeing lions and bears up north:
