Damien Rice is always reliable if you need a sad song. "9 Crimes" and "The Animals Were Gone" spring to mind.

That's pretty much the sound of a man dying, possibly the saddest song ever. After hearing Cash's version Trent Reznor said it was no longer his song. Cash had completely made it his.

Even more unfortunate is that I didn't ask for your input on my musical taste.

You've sold me. Going forward I'll PM you for your opinion on every music purchase I make. I've got enough good music in my collection anyway, why not start taking the advice of some kid on he internet?

Uncle Tupelo- Moonshiner (great song most haven't herad)

John Darnielle is good at channeling his sadness into music. As is Mark Kozelek and he seems to have a knack for coming in to bad situations.

UT nailed moonshiner perfectly.

Really, virtually anything by Trembling Blue Stars is ungodly sad. And it's all about break-ups.

But my favorite would be Little Gunshots. Another is Sometimes I Still Feel the Bruise. Sorry, no videos that I know of.

Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat; Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye, Tonight Will Be Fine, etc.

Bob Dylan - Simple Twist of Fate, Girl From the North Country

Beck - Nobody's Fault But My Own (and pretty much the entire Sea Change album)

Nick Drake - Place to Be

Songs: Ohia - the album Lioness (title track, Being in Love, Just Be Simple, Hold On Magnolia, etc)

Ryan Adams - Call Me On Your Way Back Home

Tindersticks - 2nd album

Hayden - You Are All I Have, Bad As They Seem, Streetcar

A bunch of Tom Waits, Elliott Smith...

Hell, after the amount of time I spent wallowing over my last relationship, I could probably curate a 21st century equivalent of Gloomy Sunday...
