rolling them is best. Don't fold.

I was given a set of travel containers for rolled ties. I've never used them because they take up too much space in my luggage.

I roll them up and pack them 2 or 3 rolls to a sandwich size ziploc bag. they fit tight and don't move around, so they come out pristine at the other end of the journey.

Bumping an old thread for an opinion question. Bringing a garment bag in addition to my carry-on, do you guys think that I should roll the tie or keep it hanging in the garment bag with the suit?

When I travel with more than 5 ties I lay mine flat and fold lengthwise in a dry cleaners bag. In that way they do not rub on each other nor do they wrinkle. ( I do the same with my suits) The other fantastic method is a Brioni tie case that will handle 5 ties. Zip it up and throw it in the suitcase. Open it up and hang the ties up. There is a handy dandy hanger neatly made into the lining of the case. Yahoo!

Coach sells a fantastic tie case that I have used for ever. Ties travel perfectly. If not Coach then I would try BB.
