i used to rock this look when i was a kid....i cringe at the memories. didnt realize it was back "in"...

Nothing really wrong wih California. It's just that when you're not in California, if you dress like you are, you end up looking like some Hollywood wannabee.

This seems odd to me, as I would think this look would be more popular in colder climates. I know I've done it when it in the winter months, and I live in Michigan.
