How walkable is your neighborhood?

damn, i need to get out of the burbs. i have to say how surprised i am at all the 80s and 90s around here. i guess i thought y'all were a bunch of hicks.

i'm also surprised that i am damn near the bottom with my 31. looks like i'm the real hick around here.

and, crazyquik, how the f*** does anyone score a 0? where is that?

Not necessarily. My cousins had a house on Lake Superior, 30 minutes from the closest city. They had acres of land and a really long driveway with lots of space between houses. They've been burglarlized like 5 times. When we lived on a farm after moving to quebec, it happened twice. The guy across the street was gunned down in his house by kids trying to burglarize him. People out in the boonies get targeted because there are no police within 15-20 minutes, and no neighbors to call the police because the houses are all so far apart.

How "walkable" someplace is in regards to this thread and that website refers to how close essential places to living are---- grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, schools, libraries, parks, etc. Not with how safe it is to walk. The website admits as much in its "How it doesn't work" section:


Public transit: Good public transit is important for walkable neighborhoods.
Street width and block length: Narrow streets slow down traffic. Short blocks provide more routes to the same destination and make it easier to take a direct route.
Street design: Sidewalks and safe crossings are essential to walkability. Appropriate automobile speeds, trees, and other features also help.
Safety from crime and crashes: How much crime is in the neighborhood? How many traffic accidents are there? Are streets well-lit?
Pedestrian-friendly community design: Are buildings close to the sidewalk with parking in back? Are destinations clustered together?
Topography: Hills can make walking difficult, especially if you're carrying groceries.
Freeways and bodies of water: Freeways can divide neighborhoods. Swimming is harder than walking.
Weather: In some places it's just too hot or cold to walk regularly.

Where I live just north of Wrigleyville got an 89. Where I go to school, right off the river between Ohio & Chicago streets, got a 98--- Walker's Paradise.

I'd have thought Wrigleyville was higher. I lived there for over 10 years without a car.

Wrigleyville itself very well may be. I'm just barely north of it, off Irving Park & Sheridan. I've been here since August with no car and have loved it. I actually had my car here for a week and found that it was easier and cheaper to get around w/out a car here than it was with one, so I took it back home.

You just gotta know this thing is not accurate when my Parkdale address only scores an 80. It doesn't even know there is a No frills basically across the street. And not including transit access makes zero sense when reducing cars is the goal.

25 for me. I live kind of deep in the suburbs.

77 for midtown Detroit (cultural center/brush park).

I dont know if this thing could be any more in error, at least in my case... The bookstore listed is specifically a bible bookstore, the clothing listing is a closet sized shop that sells extremely young urban wear, and the school is a theological school!

Granted, I find the neighborhood more than walkable-- my running route takes me around the campus of Wayne State, The Detroit Institute of the Arts, the Symphony, Comerica Park, etc.. but wow.. this thing is off...

62/100. Not too bad.

100 for the UWS of Manhattan.
