Oh, I also agree that foods and and caffeinated beverages count towards your water intake. Although coffee can make you urinate more because of the caffeine you still take in more water than you would have otherwise.

I carry around an 800ml klean kanteen and fill up and drink 3 of those a day. I also eat a lot of fruit and soup so my water intake should be very adequate.

I hate plain water and almost never drink any at all. I get most of my fluid requirement from iced tea, coffee and lemonade. There is actually no requirement that fluid intake be "pure water". The argument that caffeine in coffee and tea dehydrate is also bogus. Yes, caffeine is a weak diuretic, however the net gain in fluids from drinking such beverages far outweighs any tiny losses from the caffeine. We evolved, as many species did, to have thirst to guide us to the correct amounts to drink. With rare exception, I think this is the way to go. If you are thirsty, drink something. I see someone mentioned hyponatremia. For those folks that frequent raves and like to do ecstasy: Please DO NOT drink lots of water or encourage anyone else doing X to drink lots of water. This is actually very dangerous. Ecstasy sometimes has a nasty little side effect called SIADH. When this happens, drinking lots of water can result in hyponatremia followed by seizures then permanent brain damage or death. Under no circumstances should excessive fluid intake be encouraged unless you just don't like the person.

also, think how many $5 bottles of water to buy and lines you would have to wait in at the rave to get enough water in your system for hyponatremia

I drink about 3-4 liters of water, or about a gallon a day. I happen to be into bodybuilding to an extent though and I think water is incredibly important.

A college roommate of mine used to drink a gallon and a half everyday. He would drink at regular intervals, and was very strict about his daily water intake. Then, while I was reading a chemistry textbook, I came across this article. It is from "Chemistry, the Central Science" 11E, by Brown, LeMay, Bursten, and Murphey. I will quote it directly from the text, and hope that this copyright violation does not offend too many people. Title: Drinking too much water can kill you. "For a long time it was thought that dehydration was a peotential danger for people engaged in extended vigorous activity. thus, athletes were encouraged to drink lots of water while engaged in active sport. The trend toward extensive hydration has spread throughout society; many people carry water bottles everywhere and dutifully keep well hydrated. It turns out, though, that in some circumstances, drinking too much water is a greater danger than not drinking enough. Excess water consumption can lead to hyponatremia, a condition in which the cocncentration of sodium ion in the blood is too low. In the past, decade at least four marathon runners have died from hyponatremia-related trauma, and dozens more have become seriously ill. For a example, a first-time marathon runner named Hillary Bellamy, running in the Marine Corps marathon in 2003, collapsed near mile 22 and died the next day. One physician who treated her said that she died from hyponatremia-induced brain swelling, the result of drinking too much water before and during the race. The normal blood sodium level is 135 to 145 mM (millimolar). When that level drops to as low as 125 mM, dizziness and confusion set in. A concentration below 120 mM can be critical. Low sodium level in the blood causes brain tissue to swell. Dnagerously low levels can occur in the marathon runner or other active athlete who is sweating out salt at the same time that excessive salt-free water is being drunk to compensate for water loss. The condition affects women more than men because of their generally different body composition and patterns of metabolism. Drinking a sport drink, such as Gatorade, which contains some electrolytes, helpes to prevent hyponatremia. Contrary to popular belief, degtdration is not as likely as overhydration to present a life-threatening, though it can contribute to heat stroke when the temperature is high. Athletes frequently lose several pounds in the course of extreme workouts, all in the form of water loss, with no lasting adverse effects. When, for instance, Amby Burfoot ran in the Boston Marathon in 1968, his body weight went from 138 to 129 pounds during the race. He lost 6.5% of his body weight while winning the men's comopetition that year. Weight losses of this magnitude are typical of elite marathon runners, who produce tremendous amounts of heat and sweat and cannot afford to slow down for much drinking." No doubt googling this would have produced zillions of answers, but sometimes it's nice to plunk down, open a book, and get a darn reputable source to tell me in print that like with everything in life, there is are two extremes and I need to stay in between the lines. I hope this provided at least a tad bit of insight.

Oh and just to be cruel I phrased this article as if it applied to him, and he stopped drinking "too much" water instantly, except to ward off hangovers.

I don't know about others, but drinking a lot of water has never made me feel different. I used to hardly drink anything during the day, then I started drinking about 4 or 5 bottles of water a day and I still feel the same.
