I just want to make sure I have done all the right things within my own sphere of influence before I have to start looking at medical intervention (particularly the microdiscectomy - ouch!). At 37 with two small children, I don't want to have surgery unless there's absolutely no other option.

Thanks again,

If your at a loss for some kind of exercise, what about some type of yoga?

I suggested stretching because sciatic issues often stem from muscular hypertonicity in the glutes and piriformis. Search for some PNF stretching for the glutes and piriformis. Exercises to strengthen the core will definately help to stabilize the low back. In his case there may also be some nerve r impingement from the disc and degeneration also.

He has a slipped disc that's pressing on the sciatic nerve as per his diagnosis.

Microdiscectomies can be good or bad. I don't know your situation or level of pain, but I've had two clients with them and one was totally healthy and the other would occasionally hurt his back and have to recover in bed for a day or two. The latter ruptured L4-L6.

The success rate on discectomies is actually not as good as most people think, sometimes it's the only option though. I have seen some good results and some bad results, there are many variables. If you don't mind me asking what exactly do you do Why?

BTW-hip flexion is bringing the knee to the chest, extension is bringing the leg back.

Oops, meant 'hip extensor length'. Kudos. I'm a bum lately, but own a private fitness studio.
