inexpensive hotel in rome

For Christmas 1998 I stayed at the Hotel Home Michelle. I think the cost equaled about $60 a night at the time for a double room. It's a few blocks north of the Stazione Termini and has its fair share of charm (it's named after the owners' cat Michelle).

My wife and I stayed at the Residenza San Pantaleo in 2003. Nothing fancy, but clean and cheap. You couldn't beat the location either, right around the corner from Piazza Navona. Rooms are about 80 Euro / night. http://www.residenzasanpantaleo.com/home.html

Recently I stayed at hotel regno @ via del corso. It's walking distance to pretty much everywhere. The Trevi is about 2 mins away, spanish steps about 5/6 min. Colosseum about a mile. The hotel was clean, the people were friendly and all in all it was a pleasant stay.

I'm blessed with the luxury of having piles of hotel points at my disposal, so I haven't really looked lately.  But in the past, I've found some fairly nice ones (B&Bs especially) thru www.laterooms.com.   It's hit and miss.  But if you're thorough, you can end up in a really nice one in the middle of town for under $100/nt. BTW, for future reference, let us know where you end up staying and how it was/is.
