Old Aretha, Gino Washington, Solomon Burke, The Mighty Hannibal, etc.

Check out the ACE (British reissue label) catalog. They've got a ton of great stuff:

Also check this blog out:

http://funky16corners.wordpress.com/

Almost daily he posts a mp3 from a soul or funk 45", plus a bit about it's history, and a review. And 2-3 times a month he posts a great thematic compilation. This blog can take you from novice to connoisseur.

All great recommendations above. If you already like Ottis Reading, you should check Wilson Pickett, Joe Tex, Don Convey, and also Booker T & the MGs. Definitely Booker T & the MGs, as they were the band backing all of the above. This is the Stax & Atlantic corner of the ring

On the other corner, we have Motown. This year it's its 50th anniversary, and it's a good time to start digging. Last year Motown released a series of compilations with its singles. Each CD comes in a booklet with a history, covers, plus one 45" of one of the songs in the CD.

Of course there is Northern Soul, which has shifted a bit to the mainstream lately (Duffy's Mercy, Pilooski's remix for Beggin', etc).

And there are the new acts. Sharon Jones and the Dap-kings, Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators, etc.

You should get the soundtrack to the film "Dead Presidents". Its one of a few movies who's soundtrack did better than the actual movie as far a revenue. Gridlock'ed I think is another.

This is a good starter boxset, spans a wide era from 60s to 70s http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Intro...6963295&sr=8-1 Also, this one is one of the better compilations http://www.amazon.com/Treasury-North...6963295&sr=8-6 There are some good "Ultimate Collections" discographies. My fave is The Velvelettes, Martha Reeves & Vandellas, and the Marvelettes. My alltime fave soul stomper, The Flirtations "nothing but a heartache" (can't believe a video of this track exists!) and you can't go wrong with any of the Stax or Atlantic records boxsets and a huge +1 to Geno Washington and the RamJam band!! He has a CD with 3 full live sets that is amazing. Mostly all upbeat tracks with very few (if any) slow jams. Easily one of my faves, you can really feel the energy from his live sets and the recordings are crystal clear (unlike a lot of live material)

If Tower Records still exists in your area, they've always got a bunch of a cheap '60s box sets (soul, girl groups, psych/freakbeat/etc., whatever you'd like) from England that tend to be more inclusive than domestic sets.

One of my faves as well. They are playing this year in Le Beat Bespoke in London. The 45" is also somewhat easy and affordable to find. Since we're on the subject of club favourites: Nathaniel Mayer "I want love and affection (not the house of correction)". Vampisoul reissued the 45", plus a compilation of his singles: Cliff Nobles "My love is getting stronger". Rare and expensive, but it can be found in WB's Northern Soul Compilation "After Hours vol3": Bobby Freeman "C'mon and Swim". One of the 1000 reasons for Wilson Pickett's "Land of a 1000 dances". Not so hard to find the original. It is reissued, but I can't recall the compilation:

Also, there is a big record-digging/ reissues scene going on. Besides Ace that Romafan recommended (and its labels like BGP, Kent, etc), check for things from Vampi Soul, Jazzman, Sundazed et al.

www.dustygroove.com is IMO the best online recordshop for soul, funk, and jazz. It carries all the new releases and reissues, and it also releases stuff under its own label.

^^thanks for those links

One of the best comps I have, but is fairly hard to get ahold of, is called "Way with the Girls" which is, obviously, all female artists.

another good comp that is easy to get are Okeh records compilations (I think there are 3 or 4, including a single "best of"which would be a good starting point)

Buy the whole thing; you will not regret it.

I really got into soul when my mom gave her sister this Rhino comp called 'Beg, Scream & Shout'; I still remember hearing 'Sweet Soul Music' followed by 'Cissy Strut' (which some people would call funk, but who gives a shit) and being like goddamn, I need to start listening to some old black music besides Hendrix.

You've received some very good recommendations.
I want to second a few of them as almost essential:
Marvelous Marvin Gaye
James Brown and the Fabulous Flames
Sam Cooke - a tremendous string of wonderful hits.
Otis Redding - amazing number of great songs.

There are some others that I can remeber as worth getting:
Jackie Wilson
Albert King
Betty Wright - look for the tunes Clean Up Woman and I'll Be the Other Woman
Denise LaSalle
Johnnie Taylor
Little Johnny Taylor
Percy Sledge
Sam and Dave
Tams - look for I've Been Hurt
