I still say 70s thanks to Genesis and Popul Vuh.

Popul Vuh is probably the greatest band ever in the history of the Earth.

Not a pissing match. Add the Velvet Underground (+ whole garage scene) and I think a convincing argument can be made for putting punk in the 60's (my preferred decade) for added voter attraction.

WTF are Popul Vuh?

that genre is generally referred to as "proto-punk" so if you're hard for getting punk into the 60s be sure and be clear about it.

and, like the last time 'round, i also dig the 60s the most. you cannot beat the mod-soul-reggae movement in the sixties.

No offense to anyone in this thread, but I get so fucking sick and tired of the masturbatorial adoration of punk that sometimes I want to smoke crack. Or worse, vote Republican.

Of the major bands commonly understood to be the pillars of 'punk', one was just a (very good, very listenable) fast bubblegum pop band, one made one great punk record before disintegrating, one made one great punk record and then a bunch of great records that were not really punk per se, and most of the rest barely distinguished themselves beyond a handful of good, provocatively named singles. The fact that it's really about the movement and the values and this one awesome show you saw in a converted honky tonk in Louisville in 1982 that totally changed your life does not change these facts.

I get even more loco when, apparently assuming it confers some sort of otherworldly status upon bands to which it is applied, people stretch the definition of punk to include their favorite band that was totally anti and made music between 1958 and 1994 (when Kurt killed punk by blowing his brains out, duh).

One of my best friends, whose taste and judgment I respect, once tried to tell me the Beach Boys were the first punk rock band because they started out just doin it in the garage, man (or some bullshit like that, I forget cause we were drunk). I love this dude like a brother and still almost punched him in the face.

And yes, I have heard and like some Fugazi, as a random non '76 example. Sometimes I want to hear loud, fast, and angry. Sometimes I want to listen to people who put a lot of time into learning to play and write music, and don't feel bad about collecting money for doing so, despite possibly being influenced by some of the bands I referred to above.

Now kindly go Fugazi yourself.

Please ignore the preceding rant. Bona needs his medication, and he hasn't listened to 'Why Can't I Touch It' in way too long.

even though i never lived through the era, i'd have to go with the 60s. specifically a 3-5 year era spanning 1967 to about 1972. beyond the obvious (Stones, Beatles, Hendrix, etc.), it's amazing what came out of that era like the Velvet Underground's first album, the Stooges' first album, Black Sabbath's first album, etc. really an amazing period of rock.

You forgot Dylan, Jimi, 'Pet Sounds', the Zombies, 'The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society', 'Astral Weeks', live Cash, Zep II, early Floyd, 'A Love Supreme', the Band, 'Dusty in Memphis', Sly, the Byrds, early Neil Young, mid-period Phil Spector, and of course Stevie.

Oh, and Creedence.

I still voted for the 80s, obviously.

PWNED. Stevie wrote and recorded for Motown. I suck.

Krautrock/ambient band that started in either 69 or 70. I love them. Moogs and sitars, what could be better than that?!

Boy Bands/Teeny-Bop existed in every decade, don't attribute that shit to just the 90's! All decades have their highs and lows that are universal. I'm partial to the 90's, early 00's.
