I am Caucasian,
and have let my hair grow out 3 times so far in my life.
Each time I made that decision to grow it out,
it took 3 years to get it to my shoulders.
About half-way to my goal, I kept it in a ponytail, for practical reasons.
If you are starting from a buzz cut,
maybe your hair grows faster than mine did,
you'll have somewhat the 'look' you want in a year & half from now.
If your hair is straight,
you can try:
1)
Do
not use a blow dryer ever.
and bunch the hair with your hands & fingers as it dries.
That will assist in a wilder look.
2) using a dab of
hair gel or
mousse when its still wet,
and shape with your fingers again, bunching and letting it fall the way you like.
In other words,
use your fingers as a hairbrush.
For my own experiences,
I rather enjoyed

having long hair very much.
I say, enjoy the experience at least once in your life.
The last time long hair on men was really 'in' was in the early 90's.
so that's been what..17 years ago....or amybe I am wrong.
It'll probably come back in again anyway,
so why not start now.

I am 47 now, and I can't see myself growing it out again.
But then again who knows....hmm...lemme see...
If I started today, my hair would be to the shoulder by the time I am 50,
making me look like an older Battle Lord.
Maybee I just may consider it...one last time.
oh!
one last thought......
If you 'window shop' for some women's hair extensions..you can hold those up to your face,
and get an idea of how you will look with long hair.
I am sure the sales clerk will be happy to assist you.
It will be a nice point in both of your day.
You won't have to 'explain yourself' to her.
Just say you are thinking of growing your hair long,
and want to see 'the future.'
My advice is don't actually BUY or wear a hair extension though.
They are known to pull your real hair out if worn for extended periods of time.
ok best of luck!
If it's what you want to do, and if it makes you happy, and doesn't affect your job prospects,
I say go for it.
