I think the splintering fear mainly comes from when people knock the corner of a countertop or shelf with something, which then exposes the raw wood. Treated correctly, and unharmed, there wouldn't be any problem I could think of. To be fair, I have only been told this by people selling closet systems, though they were much higher end than CC, like Porro, B&B etc.

Particle board and thermofoil have all sorts of problems - they decay over time (ask a closet company to look you in the eyes and tell you that the particleboard components will be in great shape in 10 or 15 years and you'll see few people able to do that), there are many different grades of board and some are downright nasty, they often contain glues (formaldehyde) that have proven to be harmful. In summary, you buy something that looks pretty but with little knowledge of what's inside. That just bothers me a little. On the other hand, it made hollywood-star walk-in closets within reach of a larger group of people - and that's good in its own way. Hardwood carpenter closets are so damn expensive in NYC though that it's hard to justify the extra cost.

We did our walk-in using easytrack closet organizers. relatively inexpensive, you design online yourself and once that's done, it tells you exactly what pieces you need and where you can buy them. Also, CS is first rate in helping you out.

I have the easytrack system in white for my closet. best bang for the buck.
