Do one-legged squats with the dumbbell/barbell on your shoulder/back. Not ideal, but better than nothing. Also, go to rosstraining.com and look for his Never Gymless book.

Calf raises are possibly the dumbest exercise ever devised. They serve no functional purpose and are pretty bad at producing vanity results.

I've always heard that the calves you were born with are the calves you are stuck with.
