Running Twice a Day

One in the morning right after waking up then another in the evening a few hours before going to bed. Is this overkill?

Depends. What are your goals? Are you running to stay in shape? Or to lose weight? And also at what intensity do you run and how long do run for each time (duration)?

Too much cardio is bad for your immune system

Drop 10-12 pounds of fat. I run intervals. Never more than 30 mins.

Not much chance of over-training if you're only running an hour a day total, and it should help keep your metabolism elevated. I say go ahead. But some weight training would help, and nono of it matters if your diet is crap.

If you want to drop fat quickly, cardio is the way to go. However, if you want to keep fat off in the long run, I'd say lifting weights with high intensity would be the best bet. Running has no effect on your resting metabolic rate because it doesn't provide any lean body mass growth. As a result, once you stop running twice a day, as I suppose you will eventually, and continue to eat the same, you will gain your weight back. Building muscle allows you to increase your RMR, thereby allowing you to either eat more without consequence or lose weight eating more than you're used to. In other words, lift weights (with intensity) instead. www.crossfit.com is a good example of something like this.

bad idea, especially because you are asking this question

Twice is pretty hardcore and may not be sustainable. You are at risk of overuse injury if you push too hard to0 frequently.

Make sure you have a good pear of fresh running shoes. I have a pair of Asics Cumulus 10 and they feel like heaven after running too long on a pair of wornout Kayano's.

You can vary your running by mixing it up with tempo running, fartleks, light jogs and etc

Goodluck with it.

If you are trying to loose weight it would be best if you mix and match your cardio for example cycling/running - running/swimming etc etc you will find that your knees will give in with all the pressure, due to road running, so cut back on that

The question is twice a day for how many days a week and for how many weeks? If you are already lifting intensely, even sprinting 2-3 times per week can result in CNS burnout.

It might work for the short run but not for long. Also, it might disrupt your sleep pattern if you run at night which is bad for fat loss.

I used to run 3-6 miles in the morning and cycle 20-30 miles late afternoon/early evening, daily. It worked out well but it did stress my system a bit. I cut back to a few days a week of doing both and it was much better for me.

I really want to see someone running intervals on the street. I bet it looks pretty goofy.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with it.

I'd say one of the sessions you do running (whether it's morning or evening) will serve you better if you use that time to lift some weights.

I used to do intervals once a day seven days a week. What's CNS?

I think he means Central Nervous System. Two-a-days probably are overkill unless you are top runner. You might be better off being consistent with 4-5 good single runs per week, mixed with enough rest and light lifting. If you do attempt a "double", I would rest (day off) either before and/or after.
