Sure- buy new if you are only buying at steep discounts. It's a good value if you are paying retail.

I'm going to send a pair in this week. (They're around 10 years old and no longer stocked).

I have the same issue. It is hard to justify a recraft when such good deals on new pairs are out there.

I'm for recrafting, there's nothing like aged leather that conforms to your feet and years of polish on baby french calf. Completely sustainable.

But these were seconds right? If not, please share your source. I use recrafting as sort of an MTO program for soles. For example, if I want a pair of Park Avenues recrafted on the VIP rubber sole, AE will oblige, but as far as I know they do not offer the shoe in a rubber sole for retail sale.

do you know if it costs any extra to add "non-standard" soles, like getting a Park Avenue in rubber/leather combination soles?

I recently had my shoes recrafted from them and was not happy with the results (which looked like freshly soled heavily polished old shoes.

I complained to AE and they said that there is certain excessive wear that they cannot repair to which I responded that they should have told me before they began the process and they agreed and refunded me for the cost of the recrafting.

I mention this so that people can know that recrafting will not always be like new which is the impression I got from reading their recrafting page and why I went that route instead of simply getting a new pair.

What was your "certain excessive wear"?

Not Major, certainly nothing like holes and tears). I should have pictured them before and after.

But as I maintained to the rep, as I dont know what might constitute excessive wear, your recrafting specialists do so when a pair is sent in instead of doing the work and sending them back to the person you should let the customer know and allow them to decide that this time the recrafting process may not be able to restore it to its like new condition and then allow the customer to decide if they want to spend the money or opt for a new pair.

My brother just had a discontinued style, a pair of Garners, recrafted and he was thrilled with the results.

Not in my experience.
