over the patch. As for the Calvin Klein Jeans in question, in most cases that option has been eliminated. The new patches are stitched down on all 4 sides.

I'd guess that people do it because a patch that is open at the sides simply invites you to put the belt through it, especially if the patch is made from a thicker leather.
This is what I also asumed. If the patch had holes to slide the belt under it, then it was for the belt to go through. Then again, maybe it was a marketting ploy, so that we showed off the brand. Anyway, I don't have jeans with patches that allow the belt to go under it.

It seems like a patch would also not be as strong as a belt loop and extended wear might tear it off. Anyway, I'm over the patch, definitely.
