How young of women to date...

I just turned 28. Most my friends are 3-5 years younger than me because I'm a first year dental student in a new city. I don't look any older then them though and basically fit right in.

I just got out of a long relationship, so I'm trying to meet some new women. I'm not really trying to do the one night stand things anymore, otherwise I would care less about this.

So we went out last weekend and it was my birthday. Naturally everyone asked me how old I was, and I started to feel a bit odd about my age. It has also dawned on me that I will turn 30 while still a student here. I'm also suddenly aware of how young the undergrads are that mostly frequent these places. It sort of seems like this is my dating pool though, because I'm simply not around professional women, and I'm not sure they'd even be interested in dating a full-time student.


So, since I basically have to date younger I'm wondering what's appropriate. How much younger do you guys date? Maybe 22? I realize this is not the worst situation to be in.

There's a formula for this. It's half your age plus seven, so it'd be 21 or over.

Honestly though, as young as you feel comfortable with, keeping in mind that going under 21 may cause some stares. Your priority should be finding someone you connect with who shares something with you and is not too immature for you. I'd say many 20-21 year olds are still in the party hard live for today not tomorrow stage of life, so you may want someone a bit more collected then that, but really its personal preference.

This is true, but if they are younger than 21-22 then no matter how mature they may be it's creepy. You don't want to be the guy all her friends think is a loser and can't get girls his own age. Not saying you are likely to be like this, particularly if you are all in class together, but I remember when friends of mine dated much older guys we all thought they were weird, and they often turned out to be, the girls often regretted it later. Obviously your situation is a little different, and since you are thinking about it you are unlikely to come across badly. I'm 23 and I feel like I wouldn't feel comfortable dating the 18 year olds just joining uni, I would feel predatory, when there is that much of an age gap they are too easy to impress, there is no way the relationship can be equal, I would be taking advantage. Your figure of 22 or so sounds pretty reasonable, just ask yourself if your age and experience are allowing you to take advantage, if not then it's fine I think. Good luck.

Don't get "age shy", just date who you connect with and find attractive. Don't focus on age or stupid calculations. I know couples with 15 yrs diff who are fine and people of the same age who are a big pile of fail (obviously) so just stop over thinking that age appropriate thing.

True, but that also depends on the other person, and whether age-appropriateness is important to them dating-wise...

Don't worry about the age. It is hard enough to find someone you enjoy spending your free time with.

My last gf was 18 years younger than me and it was the longest relationship i've had. Kinda have my sights set on a woman around my age right now-so we shall see.

I'd say envision yourself having a daughter and what age difference you would be okay with. Then date girls based on that age difference. If it's for a longterm relationship, then date someone closer to your age who is ready for the same things you want in life. The younger girls aren't ready for that kind of committment. I'd say at least 22...

Old enough to have graduated from college. There may be exceptions, but why would you date anyone under 22?
