My impression was that she just couldn't comprehend what she was doing or what was happening to the prisoners. I don't think that's all that uncommon.

I think that was true during the trial, but my interpretation was that as she educated herself by learning to read, she also evolved in terms of conscience and came to understand the enormity of what she had done. And of course she couldn't have done the former without his help, so in a sense he taught her to become a human just as she taught him to become a man. All compounded by the fact that the world (represented by him) had moved on without her and there was no one to help her work through her higher level of awareness.

YMMV, of course, which is a good thing about multi-layered stories.
