I think a lot of the opinions presented in this thread will change once the posters have children.

There are just as many poorly behaved adults in restaurants as there are kids. Hopefully you don't get either at a nice restaurant- I haven't seen any snotty kids at any "nice" restaurants for as long as I can remember.

False. If I have children and and walk into a restaurant with my kids and stroller in tow I would apologize for not realizing it is a fine dining establishment and leave discreetly.

I have never come across an adult that has been more disruptive and annoying than a child.

^^ Back in college I went to an Applebees with a bunch of friends, next to us there was a group of WASPY/Pseudoreligious types, maybe the weird mormon types, they were all dressed like they were from the 1940's and had sticks up their asses. They had kids with them wearing full dresses, and the boys were wearing what you'd expect the "Best sunday dress" to be from Little House on the Prairie. They were rude to the server, complained about everything really, constantly requesting extra things, when the server asked them "how is everything?" every one of them said something nitpicking a part of their dish, it's ******* Applesbees for ***** sake. I got the vibe they were white trash who decided to go for a "fine night out at a high establishment such as applebees" I can't remember more specifics but they were so rude and uptight that I wanted to smack the lot of them. Anyway, I ended up calling their server over, then doing my best impression of them within earshot, I told him that I wanted some chicken wings but I don't like bones, and god help him should I find any bones. Having been a server in before, I felt bad for him and I apologized to him for having ******* insane customers, and tipped him an extra $20 on our meal. I haven't been more annoyed than that by a kid that I can remember.

What part of the US is this? Sounds like typical trailer elite/ connesieurs of fine corporate restaurants and fine chicken fingers.

I don't have kids but I personally enjoy watching a kid at a nice restaurant try escargot for the first time. In general most people at nice restaurants take themselves much to seriously any way. Myself included.

I think the concept of someone treating Applebee's as fine dining, deserves its own thread. It is funny, sad, and annoying, but not part of this thread. Another great chain this happens at, a little more upscale though, if P.F. Chang's. It is so obvious many people there are out for a fine dining experience and also, there are inevitably two or three tables where the bratty kids will play Ringo Starr on their plates, the entire ******* meal, with the chop sticks.

It is somewhat sad, IMO, that people mistake these places for fine dining. It reminds me of our differing perspectives, and tells me that how we feel about these folks, is probably how the true uppers feel about us. /shrug.

It all boils down to the adults.

EVERY parent thinks he/she has got the perfect good little kid. I really want to puch in face, stab in belly with butter knife, stick a fork in mouth those parents who are just friggin oblivious to the fact that their kids are annoying the whole establishment.

I know my kids can be nice, but can be quite unruly also.

My wife and I don't take my kids to super highend restaurants, but we have to medium level ones. We request seats in back close to bathroom. We pre-feed the kids a bit with some McD fries. We order our foods and theirs and ask the waiter to bring EVERYTHING out at once, does not have to have any specific order like appetizer than salad than meal. We eat quickly and exit. If kids act up they are taken out for a good beat down (just kiddin'). They are taken out of restaurant for a 3 minute time out.

Same with so many restaurants. Sometimes you want great food- and sometimes, you just want cheesecake factory, olive garden, or whatever. But when you go there, and you see all these ++ sized people all out for their fancy dinner, it totally kills the atmosphere and you feel depressed.

My kids have eaten at the best restaurants and from an early age. They are not perfect, but they were taught how to behave in public.

The problem is always with the parents. So many are frigging useless.

That's my point. If there's all those ++ size people, they are the majority that sets the atmosphere, not you. You go there knowing what to expect. As my first post here said, if I go to Chuckie Cheese and ***** about the kids running around wildly, I'm an asshole. Cheesecake Factory was made for the ++ crowd to enjoy themselves, in over sized, or sugar'ed and fatted portions. If you go there, and are surprised or upset at the crowd, you're the asshole.

If they go to the Guy Savoy, in wrinkled cargo shorts and flip flops, looking for fried cheese sticks, they're the asshole.

I honestly cannot say I've ever had a time in my life when I've actually wanted to go to Olive Garden or Cheesecake Factory. I'd much rather eat at a taco truck or get some cheap indian than eat vacuum packed bullshit slathered in synthetic sauces and enough salt to kill a small dog.
