Strictly speaking you're right, but at another level we are all sort of here to entertain each other aren't we? Not saying it's anyones responsibility or anything bordering on that but at the same time, if you're going to participate here the goal is generally to express, show off, or try to develop in some way. I suppose it's also frustrating that this is "Style Forum" but that feels like a bit of a misnomer sometimes, and the reality is that it wouldn't be very difficult for most people to make what they're wearing more exciting. Not sure what your problems with Magician's suggestions are other than the fact that the way he wrote it was a bit cheeky.

Not sure what else you guys are looking for in terms of "suggestions on how to improve", or perhaps you just didn't read what he wrote?

Also, "most people" are unattractive generally speaking so that's kind of a moot point.

You're right, I didn't.

Goth ninja was the example used though, not saying people are getting persecuted for not dressing like that.

No one said goth ninja expect you guys.

Yeah personally I love and wear Rick Owens and Julius, but I'm young and have a unique job. I mentioned Dior and Yohji only in terms of proportion play and the only designer I recommended was recent Junya. While I love what would be termed "goth ninja" i have just as much respect for a well-executed Lanvin fit as one from Poell.

It's called STYLEforum. If you care enough to read it and actually take the time to post a picture you should care enough to dress with a bit of personality and distinction.

People are here for plenty of reasons and there have been far too many "what is the purpose of the waywt" threads to even consider starting up that conversation again. People, beyond the point of absolute newbie, know what they're wearing and what they look like, and have decided that this is the way they want to dress. Comments like "sleeves are too long" or "not into the colour combination" or "don't like the shoes" are one thing, but at this point you're basically telling people, "that looks fine and all, but I think you should dress in a different and riskier manner so as to inject more excitement into my internet message board experience". To which the only reasonable answer must be, "no, stfu". Dude above looks fine. Perhaps could make minor tweaks with fit. If high water cuff, boat shoe, shirt is his thing, let him do his thing. The only reason someone should venture into unknown territory and do new and adventurous things with their WAYWTs is if they get bored with what they're doing, not if you do. PS: Go WAYWT discussion thread... turned out to be a good idea to split them up. At least this kind of crap doesn't de-rail the real thread anymore.

I referenced goth ninja because it's generally been present in these types of arguments in the past. There's nothing wrong with trying new things and honestly, it does get redundant to see the same safe SF-approved creations in this thread. My point was simply that in a lot of cases, people will look better with that safe look than with the experimental (i.e. goth ninja) approach to fashion. Some guys can pull it off, but most just look like they're playing dress up.

^^I kind of have to agree with JD May on this one.

I think that "at another level we are all sort of here to entertain each other" is kind of over thinking oneself.

I mean this place is a pretty good place to get lots of info, buy and sell stuff and a lot of the people are fun to talk to--but I've never really thought that I am here or my posts in the WAYWT thread are to entertain others. I've always viewed it much more literal than that.

However, I really don't have a problem with any of the feedback given by Magician/Kunk/ARW either.

You telling him how to post is just as bad as him telling that kid how to dress. The fact is this is an internet message board where people can post freely in whichever manner they please. If he wants to criticize in a pretentious, elitist way then so be it. (You do have the power to ignore people and scroll!) The fact is when you post pictures of yourself on the internet, especially in a place where people can comment on them, you should be ready to handle whatever some weird old dude you'll never meet in your life wants to write on his keyboard.

I'm referring to this out of context, but I will never understand this thought, this line of reasoning, where the point of departure is between normalcy, style, try-hard and costume, when the grains become a heap, etc. For me, there are essentially no limits inside of what I find aesthetically pleasing. I sometimes feel like this line is kind of a cop-out for people who are afraid to try new stuff or stick out too much but I try not to judge people too much.

I think you're taking what I said a little too literally. The purpose of criticism and suggestions (and the hope that people will listen) [not talking about WAYWT discussion or the forum in general here] is not primarily entertainment for anyone, though I think it sometimes can be a secondary impetus. The purpose of comments that are outside of what you were talking about as fine is to help people along because that's what the commentator thinks is constructive. I think the idea of "everyone has figured out their style and that's it, you can't tell people what to wear as long as it fits and isn't horrible!" is pretty silly and not constructive for this discussion or forum. I know my personal style has expanded because members here gave me suggestions [like Magician's] when I was a newb. I think I am better for it now. Not to mention the fact that the poster in this case is a newb. I am not demanding that people do things for my entertainment. Jeeze. Also, I posted that I thought this dudes fit was alright, not sure if you caught that. Also, Borlaug raises some good points which are similar to what I'm saying.
