As a first impression, you have the exact same "issues" that I had with photos. I either have the stoic stone face or I try to smile and it comes out as a smirk.
Now, onto the hair. I don't think it's a bad look, but I think the fauxhawk is one of those haircuts that people remember you by. You don't want to be remembered as "that guy with that haircut." You want to be remembered as "that great looking guy." I really think that a classic short(er) cut would allow you greater opportunity to bring/keep the attention on you and not your definitive hair. I'm thinking along the lines of Clooney circa Ocean's 11 (or 12 or 13).
Just two cents from another new guy.

i am not sure what you meant by that "Clooney circa Ocean's 11(or 12 or 13)". you lost me. but thank you for an answer that was at least descent and you were even very helpful. i love when people have to comment on a thread and they tend to not see and most of the time ignore the keywords of the thread like "help" and such. Philip, By "Clooney circa Ocean's..." I was referring to George Clooney's hair in the "Ocean's 11" films. I'm too lazy at the moment to do a Google search followed by a cut and paste. If you check out the images for Clooney's style in the film "Ocean's 11," you'll see this haircut. It's a very simple cut that combines classic leading man with timeless cool. The movie came out a few years back and the haircut would still work well today.
