I love hats! Well...caps.
Have a largeish collection of caps.
My crown jewel is a brown leather spitfire (Kangol).
I was a bit hesitant to wear it at first (being leather and all), but I'm so loving it now.
Surely the only hat design in leather (and ONLY in brown leather that is) I would ever wear.

Given that I shave my head, this is not much of a concern. And before I gave in to the inevitability of genetics, I kept my hair pretty short, so I didn't have to worry about hat hair.

I wear a medium brimmed gray felt fedora most often, though less often now that I am back in school and dress more casually. I will wear it with jeans occasionally though depending on my coat. I also occasionally wear a brown trilby made out of a thin, oil-cloth like material. It's more casual, and I wear it like that. Edit: I also have a panama for summer wear that is actually the nicest hat I own. I don't foresee it getting as much wear now though, either.

Not sure if you consider a flat cap or newsboy cap a "hat", but I tend to wear one when I have a "bad hair day" (i.e. hung over and too lazy to take a shower or fix my hair) or if it's snowing excessiveley. I also sometimes wear them in the summer instead of a baseball cap to shade my eyes. I've been thinking of getting a fedora, but not sure I would be able to pull it off without people thinking I'm only wearing itas a gimmick. I also wear knitted caps when I'm doing outdoor sporting activities (i.e. running and skiing in the winter) or when it's really, really, cold, snowy and/or windy.

I have short hair and I only use a moderate amount of wax in it. Whenever I take my hat/cap off I just ruffle the hair with my fingers and that usually does the trick. It can be a bit difficult if you don't have a mirror close by, but as others have pointed out, if you have a hat in the right size it won't mess up your hair so much. Hats with a bit of room above your head (i.e. fedoras) are better for this also, since they don't actually flatten your hair when you're waring it--unless you have really high hair....

In my experience, the wind can actually mess up your hair more than a hat does on a windy day.

From about November through March I wear a wool beanie almost all the time (I'm a student, so it's no problem to wear it through the day).

When the wool beanie would be inappropriate, I go with a tweed scally, or I go hatless.

In the summer, I go with a cotton scally or sometimes a baseball cap

What is a scally? According to Wikipedia you're wearing a hooligan on your head, and according to Dictionary.com you have a scalp infection during winter. I doubt either is what you meant.

In case anyone (other than me) is considering getting a hat, here's some useful information on selecting a look that suits you: http://artofmanliness.com/2008/03/01...-back-the-hat/ http://artofmanliness.com/2008/05/28...your-ugly-mug/

I wear a flat cap or a felt shooting hat (looks like a fedora but it has no lining and can be flattened/ treated rough) if the weather calls for it. I would like to wear a hat more often but don't feel like I can without looking weird. Oh, and I wear a panama in the summer.
