those of you who are recommending "just get her a real gun." there's a qualifier you need to add to that. it's "get her a real gun, a license to carry, and proper training." the license to carry is dictated by your federal, state, and local laws. you'll have to look into this one as everyones' situation varies. but it is a necessity. follow the rules. and guns are NOT just plug-and-play. you don't get to just pick up a firearm and automatically be proficient enough to save your life. no matter how many bruce willis films you've seen. no matter how much money you dropped on a chrome-plated, custom tune gun. none of this will replace ammo, time, and practice. so unless you or your significant other are planning on dedicating a reasonable amount of time to properly carrying and using a firearm, i would recommend stay away. seems like a taser or pepper spray is a good alternative form of non-lethal defense. i would recommend pepper spray as well, since it provides some effective range. tasers require you to be within physical contact of your assailant-- probably not a good situation, especially if they are armed. i know there are tasers that fire conductive nodes out via CO2 cartridge. this seems gimmicky and unreliable to me, but i have no experience or seen them in practical use. an addendum on the pepper spray, it is very important that they are replaced frequently as well as inspected for clogs, decompression, shelf life of OC, etc.. i have a funny story about pepper aerosol failing on me when i thought it was serviceable. i also have a funny story about a pepper aerosol working on me when i thought it was degraded. anyhow if you can get your hands on it i recommend "fox labs" (http://www.foxlabs.com/) products. this stuff is no joke. get the "fog" tip too. it'll knock you on your ass, jack. also the canisters have a built-in safety, which is smart. hope you find what you need. stay safe.
