Haha, one of the benefits of growing up and going to school in the SF Bay Area... lots of weekend trips up to wine country. I regret not double majoring in viticulture and enology since I took so many courses for fun in college.

One of my college friends bought a small vineyard and promises that I can just sit out there like the Godfather should I ever lose my job.

One of the things I just remembered from that move: '47 Cheval Blanc ... $50. Those were the days.

Plus the Montelena wine that actually won the competition.... $6.

Not only that, I was thinking, a dive semi-biker bar like that, with a '47 Cheval Blanc? Wow.

That's $22 in today's dollars, which is still good. http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl

I remember reading an article that there are two movies about this same contest, one sanctioned by the vinyard's owner, and the other by the vintner, or something. They had a falling out and don't agree over who deserves the credit. I don't think the other one's come out.

I've been on since 2005 without any movement to date. Production volumes are even tinier than many of the other hot wineries and they make an effort to get bottles into the on premise (restaurants, bars) market, so there really isn't much to go around. Too bad, b/c it is great stuff. Another option is to try to buy futures (not sure if Sea Smoke is participating) via the Wine Cask in Santa Barbara. Even if they aren't, the futures program is definitely a great way to sample other hard to find, primarily pinot-based Santa Barbara county wines.

I thought Bottle Shock was a solid movie with excellent camera work but a weak script. And terrible wig on Bo.

The British guy was hilarious, loved the KFC bucket scene.

But still, I can't get enough Sideways. That movie just grows on you each time and you pick up new details and layers. "If they want merlot..."

Well, I downloaded Sideways and am watching it now. It cracked me up when Giammati looks himself in the mirror and says "You are such a fucking loser."
It's also really beautiful the way he and Maya describe the wines and why they enjoy Pinot. Halfway through, but this is a good movie so far.
