Mjolk

There’s been a bit of talk about this stuff recently, thought I’d contribute a little as it’s one of my favorites. From slamxhype.com (article is from about six months ago): “Mjolk has been gaining quite a strong following in recent times after the labels move from Melbourne to New York, Created by menswear designer and Denmark Designskole (DKDS) graduate Lars Stoten together with St Martins graduate John Clarke. Mjolk recently released their Spring/Summer 09 lookbook which boasts an impressive collecion of summer menswear. Influenced by the changing seasons of New York, this latest Mjolk homme collection finds perfect balance between classical elegance and avant-garde appeals, incorporating vibrant colors with classically tailored pieces, while focusing on clean and simple aesthetics. Also included in the Spring Summer collection is an impressive series of leather accessories, ranging from ruck sacks to shoes and belts. We can expect alot more great things from the now NY-based label.” Pronounced “meyelk” or “milk”. Lars is apparently an awesome guy, the dude sounds like quite the craftsman, having studied very intricate Japanese costume design in Japan in addition to his experience at the Denmark School of Design. For those of you that read, Mjolk was featured in issue 7 of h(y)r collective. From the shots I’ve seen, the F/W 09 is alright, not as awesome but still some cool ideas, though they have not released a lookbook yet so that might change. S/S 09 is probably my favorite, the F/W 08 is also wonderful. Some of you will be turned off by the boy-ishness, dandyism, androgyny, funkyness, etc but I think it’s really masculine, stylish and fun. I guess it’s really not for everyone but, hey, nothing is. If you’re curious about quality, Chrono and Vashin will rave to you about a pair of slacks from last season. Unfortunately there are currently very few stockists stateside, so tracking the stuff down is tough but certainly worth it I think. Bblessing carries some instore I believe…anyway I’m constantly on the look out, hahah. This is a link to an interview with Lars: http://www.f-t.com.au/blog/?p=184#more-184 Here’s some of S/S 09, anyone who wants to contribute other stuff, feel free. I also do have some online stores bookmarked… GS or someone needs to hit up this bag, gorgeous.

Whodini and I talked to Lars at Capsule NYC. Perhaps Who could post a single picture from that series as a teaser on our article on the line?

Damn, I'm real jealous.

I could never wear any of those shorts but part of me wants to be able to.

I like the belts and that oversized vneck sweater. That shawl cardigan thingy is awesome as well, I would totally wear that. What's the price point? Is it cheap enough for a university student to own a piece?

Retail is probably NDG type pricing. Which means if you're a super bargain shopper, you're gonna have to wait till deep sales

Fixed some images that weren't working, curious about more people's reactions to this stuff...may post F/W '09 shots from the show a few weeks ago...

I like it very much, but I doubt I'd ever be able to wear most of it personally (although, I really like the styling of the shoes especially). And, of course, the bags are great. I'd love to see them in person.

Thanks for posting this; I must admit I've never heard of the brand and will look forward to keeping this one on my radar.

You guys pretty much cleared out Winn Perry's remaining stuff.

^Yeah I know what you mean. Um, I think a month or two ago when they had the lookbook on their site there was a spreadsheet with very good pictures of every item on hangars. Unfortunately, I think because the operation is pretty small and intimately run, they don't update their website too frequently, so right now there's nothing but that ad for the F/W '09 show. Hopefully we'll get some updates soon and we can find more shots of these clothes. Robin that cape-coat makes me crazy...oh goodness... When I posted this stuff I wasn't really expecting a lot of people to imagine themselves wearing it (whole looks, though certainly I'm sure almost everyone sees a piece...) as it is pretty particular stuff. I was/am more curious about peoples general thoughts of the execution and styling and what not. Glad people like it so far, they (Lars, John and the rest of their crew) deserve it.

I just wonder how many of these boyish brands (APC and a lot of the Swedish brands) will survive the recession. A lot of it is all midline stuff with a lot of design overlap.

I think Mjolk is pretty different, but you're certainly right, some of these brands are a little derivative and it will be interesting to see how many last.

Well APC has been around forever is not likely to be going anywhere, but I could see several European designers eventually getting lost in all of the noise.
