Boring ties are the best ties, IMO. Same thing with shirtings. I prefer for eccentricity and vibrancy to come out through less-boring suits and shoes, as well as tasteful accessories. I really dislike the look of a loud shirt and tie worn with a sober suit and bland shoes.

the wool and cashmere ties were accumulated over many years and are all different makes, many of which aren't available any longer

I can't get excited about ties. The fetters of the modern man. I tend to buy mine from Charity shops - 50p a throw. I have few silk ones. Horrible things. The alternatives? Bow tie - only suitable for the consultant surgeon or the older eccentric professional. Cravat - suggests that one "bats for the other side". Only the OAP be-tweeded gent can get away with it.

Sometimes I cannot wait to be old in order to pull such things off and not care at all.

Even as an old man, there's no way I'd wear a cravat. It might affect the lines of my cloak.

As an old man I'd relish taking my stick to annoying schoolchildren and tapping my pipe out wherever I pleased. It would be "eccentric old boy, ignore him, he's always like that"!
