Hahaha!!! You would love The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Murakami. Really up your alley.

Perhaps at some level that's true, but some people have expressed specific fears that I just don't share. Drowning, for for example, is something I've come close to on several occasions, but it is not even close to being a fear. I'd actually prefer drowning to most other ways of dying.

+1, having talked to two people that were recusitated? after having been drowned it seems that after the panick subsides its a peacefull way to go. You sort of "zone out" as it were...

At the age of 12 I found myself caught in an undertow. I stuggled for the longest time ... then finally surrendered to the thought I would die. I have never had a more peaceful moment in my life. I really can't describe it.

About that time I popped up on the surface. The peace was over.

EDIT: This is not to suggest that I was disappointed to have survived.

dying when i'm in a scenario that will leave my family thinking things about me. like dying at my desk, and all a sudden my antivirus expires and all these popups flood my monitor for free child porn and penis upgrades.then they find me

My greatest fear is being out surfing and finding myself surrounded by jellyfish: in hot weather they tend to come inland en masse. They seriously scare me and I can't think of anything worse than being surrounded by them with no way out.
