I'm a student, so lasering isn't really financially feasible right now, and I'd feel pretty guilty for laying out that kind of money on what's essentially a vanity project (if I was extremely hairy, then it might be different).
Just to clarify, I waxed my stomach. Not my chest, for which slight trimming is fine. Hairy stomachs look especially unattractive, at least in my opinion, while chest hair is still considered to be fairly normal/acceptable. My chest isn't extremely hairy to begin with, so the overall post-wax look doesn't seem unnatural. I've also avoided the breakouts so far (been about a week now), so I guess I'm lucky to have pulled that off on my first try.
Bonus: I've been trying to get into shape, and have been going to the gym much more regularly (about 5 days/week) to cut down on my body fat, and the results are far more visible without hair obscuring the view.
For those considering it, I must reiterate that the degree to which it hurts is dependent on how cleanly the strip comes off your body. you need to pull as hard as possible, otherwise the strip might get stuck on the longer hairs (especially if you haven't trimmed beforehand, which you should), which basically feels like a hundred or so hairs pulled halfway off. Very painful. The psychological effect of a clean pull also helps dull the pain, at least for me.
