this is a question for those of you who are serious about your diet/training; do you drink milk? why or why not?

please be specific.

i drink close to 3 gallons of skim per week. with most meals i'll have a large glass, as well as with whey protein. i like the taste though, and have no issues with even mild lactose intolerance, so my system handles it very well. for me its a great way to help bulk up while staying lean, and i've been very pleased with the results of incorporating it into my diet. if your body can handle it, i say drink up!

I drink my share of skim as well. People bitch about the sugar, but I don't think this is something to worry about until your body fat is down to single digits. Milk is good for you. edit - I was bored at work one day and decided to try to find the simplest diet that would supply a good ratio of (healthy) fats, protein, and carbs, plus necessary vitamins and minerals. I came up with eating an equal ratio of gallons of fortified skim milk to cups of plain almonds. According to fitday.com, 1 gallon of milk + 1 cup of almonds is 2303 calories, 30% fat (4% sat, 6% poly, 17% mono), 39% carb, and 31% protein. It also would give you >100% of the RDA of all vitamins and minerals with the exception of vitamin c, niacin, and fiber, all of which are about half the daily value (and of course if you up the calories, you get even closer).

Don't drink any. Don't need it. There's nothing wrong with milk but for me there are too many carbs with the protein that comes in it. I'd rather have cottage cheese and whey protein shakes as far as dairy-based protein sources are concerned.

Ive been going through skim like mad lately making greek yogurt. Straining off the way increases the protein/carb ratio I think.

is there a specific edu on making greek yogurt that you follow? thanks as for me, i drink a glass before 1-2 hours before i sleep and a glass following a workout. i don't take whey

I certainly don't drink milk under ordinary circumstances. And I have a very good reason for not drinking milk. . . I don't like the taste.

That said, I do eat cheese. And, when I go climbing, I take powdered milk because it is a good source of protein that doesn't spoil easily.

i said be specific!

what do you get (nutritionally) from drinking milk that you could not get otherwise? i know milk is better for you than soda or beer, but why should one drink milk instead of water? you can get protein from meat and other sources. you can get calcium from green leafy vegetables, and the vitamin d in milk is an additive anyway.

i don't know of any animal in the wild that drinks milk as an adult or that drinks the milk of other animals, so why do we?

What single food do you eat that you can't the same nutrients from another source? You can live a perfectly healthy life without drinking it, but that's true for any single food as well.

Milk is nutritious, thats why many groups have used it as part of there diets. It has allowed people to exploit marginal evironments where grasses and not much else grows, which is one of the reasons human have traditionally used it as a food source.

Humans do alot of things other species don't do, that fact alone doesn't make them good or bad.

Added: I drink it because I like the taste. It acts as a good base for shakes I make and goes well with cereal on the occasions I eat it. It's also is a good source of protein, calcium, and vitamin D (even if it is added). Yes I can get those from other foods, but milk provides them easily.

i like it too, and i have a carton of non-fat milk in my refrigerator right now. i just find it strange that we drink milk as adults and that we drink milk from animals. i'm not saying we should not, just that i find it strange.

i can understand people drinking milk because they like it, but i don't find the nutritional argument compelling. most people in first world countries get way more protein than they need anyway, and eating more vegetables would take care of the calcium.

I do three 8oz servings of skim milk and use a total of 4oz of 2% milk in my coffee each day! When the weight starts to creep up, I cut the skim back to a total of 12oz and drink my coffee black (that really sucks!).
