Bodybuilders who want to lower body fat into the single digits. People on extreme diets for weight loss. Epileptic children (zero carb ketogenic diet is a known treatment for epilepsy). As a sports nutrition, I would figure you'd be at least somewhat aware of the last situation. Do you at least concede the fact that the body can adapt to and fully function under a zero carbohydrate diet, or should we start pointing to sources?

i consume more than enough carbs, yet i am able to maintains single digit fat levels for the last 10 years, without any problems, and this without any cardio.

i know many ppl who have competed in bb contest and swear that they will never do it again as the carb deprivation messed up their body and mind.I know this doesnt apply to everyone, but it does to most, especially women

ppl on extreme diets just put the weight back on.I should know as they come to me for help.I highly discourage ppl to go on extreme diets if they are going to be white knuckling it

i am not saying these extreme diets dont work, its just that they are not sustainable longterm

i have got a very success rate amongst clients,as i educate them about nutrition, how to read nutritional values, portion sizes, nutrient timing, supplements etc, also the importance of a weights program as that is the best way to keep lean.

Your body burns 50x more calories just to maintain muscle as opposed to fat.

Wow. Someone who understands argumentum ad verecundiam on the Internet. Amazing.

You mean you did this without running or biking and such...

...

Total bullshit on your part. If you're going to lie, at least be creative.

It's not extreme and a lot of people prefer it.

Yes they are.

You really should research this if you consider yourself a professional.

I'll finish up week 4 of the training program tomorrow.

When I started the program I weighed 176lbs and had a 38" waist. As of today I weigh the same with the same sized waist.

My recovery time has increased as well as my strength but physically I look no different. I still have massive obliques and a bit of back fat and my stomach still looks bloated. My diet has been consistently between 1700 & 2100 calories a day getting over 1gm of protein per lb of body weight and I have kept the carbs all the way down into the 50gm-70gm's a day. I eat 16oz of grilled chicken a day, eat every two hours and stop eating after 7PM.

As far as the workout goes it is 30 minutes, one set per workout, total body, thee days a week. I have implemented a body weight circuit one other day for a total of 4 days a week. On a scale 1-10 the intensity level of workouts are between a 7-9 each time.

I plan on giving this 12 weeks and hopefully I will make some progress as this is a little over $100 per week to do the personal trainer alone, not to mention the food.

I know I am a hard gainer and even at a bodyfat percentage of 8.5% at 18 I still did not have a "cut" up look. The reality is I may never get fully rid of the big obliques due to genetics but I'd like to build the nicest physique possible without steriods or amphetamines.

I'll keep you updated on the progress....

Hmmmm....

What would be symptoms if any for an underactive thyroid? Oddly enough I had a few tests done around 05' because of a possible nodule on my thyroid and the tests were inconclusive. They did x-rays and everything seemed to look good. The nodule or whatever it was is not there anymore.

Because of that my doctor prescribed me Paxil to help calm down from the anxiety of me thinking I had cancer. BTW.... it was 40mg to start! I later read after having fits coming off of it that 50mg is the max dosage recommended. It took a year to get off of it and in the process I went from around 170 to topping out at 203 and the obliques ballooned! I have never been able to get rid of them since then and my dad has always had large ones. I went to the doctor last year and got a general blood test done and everything came back fine. One note was my testosterone was at 400 on a 200-800 scale. I know higher testosterone levels lend well to fat burning and muscle development.

I know I am just rattling but just have a lot of questions. This will be a long process and in that time I hope to change my lifestyle around.

well, super high test levels can lead to aromatisation to estrogen but your levels aren't really high.

thyroid symptoms:

"¢ Fatigue and weakness "¢ Low basal temperature ( cold intolerance) "¢ Dry and coarse skin "¢ Hair loss "¢ Cold hands and feet "¢ Weight gain "¢ Insomnia "¢ Constipation "¢ Depression "¢ Poor memory, forgetfulness, dementia "¢ Nervousness and tremors "¢ Immune system problems "¢ Heavy menstrual periods

nothing to worry about, but it is something docs look for when a person gains or maintains weight despite a good diet, exercise routine or caloric defecit

To be clear my diet has sucked for years. I have only cleaned it up in the last couple of weeks. I have always consumed a lot of processed foods, fast foods, carbs, etc. It never materialized until the Paxil came into play. It was to my appetite what steriods are to strength. It allowed me to eat more than ever, more frequently and not care at all about it. It wasn't until I hit over 200lbs before I realized it was really ruining me. I got off of it in January of 2007 and dropped down to around 165-170lbs within 4-5 months however the bodyfat stayed high.

I was on a low carb diet. On more than one occasion I got really gassy. Often when I expelled gas some small quantity of greasy fecal matter would unexpectedly escape into my underwear. This really turned me off to low carb diets.

I wasn't intending on going on a "low carb diet" only to start eating better for good.

There is a joke about this I tell which is true, "I have abused carbohydrates and sugary foods all of my life." I say this because when cutting these out I experience withdrawl symptoms like a heroin addict. My blood sugar would feel like it was plummeting and I would be confined to pretty much sleeping all day. So at the personal trainers recommendation they told me I needed more protein and less carbohydrates.

I do not remember them telling me how many grams of carbs a day but I do remember them telling me I needed to take my body weight and multiply it by .70 to get my total protein needs.

Taking the trainers advice and going beyond it by consuming around 1 gram per lb of body weight and kept foods with carbs out of my diet has kept me around 1600-1800 calories a day and only about 90 grams of carbs a day. The trainer told me today that I needed about double of the amount of carbs I am eating (complex carbs of course) especially before workouts.

I am now working on modifying my eating habits to get more of the complex carbs in it as well as getting more carbs in before and after workouts.

mike, you have a similar problem to guy i knew...he tried everything and couldnt get rid of his love handles

i recommended that he cut down on calorie intake for a couple of weeks/months,while still working out with weights. He weighed 168 and got down to 151,but still had the dreaded love handles.

The guy was inconsolable, but he persisted and finally got the results he was looking for...but at a sickly weight of 145 lbs.He was extremely lean, but lost too much lean muscle

So we decided that he have 2 weeks off from training while eating enough calories to sustain his current weight.

We then devised a weight/nutritional plan where he slowly put on lean muscle...maybe 2-3 lbs a month, and found the weight was evenly distributed over his frame

He is now around the same weight as he started ,but with body fat of 8-9% and love handles

Yes my father is 68 and probably in the 140's-150's no gut and still has those damn things. I personally didn't get them until the Paxil allowed me to eat so much.

On a different note if there is one thing I can tell you is always know what you are putting into your body and always know how much insurance you have, lol. It wasn't until a year of the Paxil till I realized it was EXTREMELY tough to get off of and even tougher when I learned I was on an extremely high dosage of it. Because of it I probably got the love handles a few years earlier than I would have.

How noticeable are his at 9% bf? I would assume not very noticable.

My issue is they are so noticable when wearing shirts that fit slim, especially t-shirts. Right now I have a 38" waist and a 38" chest. I can literally suck in my stomach as hard as I can and only get the tape down to 35" because of them and I wear a sz 32 jeans!

Shirts that fit slimmer show them off, especially t-shirts. I assume while they may never go away they will shrink and I will increase the size of my chest to offset them.
