If dancing with of different sex is not your thing, you shouldn't go.
Although you should consider being just a decorative drinker.

Are you required to bring a formal cardboard box to the party if you want to breakdance?

The dancing will depend on the event and the crowd itself. A white-tie Viennese Ball will obviously call for the Viennese Waltz. A black-tie wedding, will likely include slow dancing with more lively, modern music mixed in. A black-tie gala geared for an older crowd will have more slow dancing, while one aimed at a "young professional" crowd will probably have less slow dancing and more up tempo music, but not gangster rap.

In all seriousness, I grind and get down. Everyone is drunk anyway. There is no ballroom dancing at black tie events, unless it's some kind of ballroom dancing event.

Most black tie I have been to that involved dancing has featured variations on the ceilidh/reeling thing, occasionally swing type dancing then the band goes, more drinks are had and then the grinding thing happens. Its pretty unusual to go to an event with ballroom dancing etc.
I should have thought if dancing was involved then the invitation should specify what you can expect (or call and ask).

When I know I have to bust a move on the dance floor in black tie I wear a pair of very shiny Chelsea boots, probably going to attract some flack for that on this forum but they are comfy, look better than what most people are wearing and even though they are leather bottomed they give a decent amount of grip. Maybe you can polish up some work shoes?

At one University "ball" I went to music was provided care of Goldie Lookin' Chain (crap comedy rap) so there were a lot of DJ clad guys and ball gown clad girls making like gangtas

Typically there a lot of people doing the white man's overbite, rocking back and forth, somewhat in sync with the music. And then there's always that one guy who's spinning the girl in and out and running into people.

Pretty much like any nightclub that caters to baby boomers.

It really depends on the event, setting, band, and average age of attendants. Most of the Black ties I attend have a very young crowd and modern bands so the dancing is just like any party.

As ChicagoRon said I believe it really does depend on the event, music playing, and the average age. Example: Some school dances are really formal and take place in very nice locations and require proper attire, but people still grind and dance like any non-formal event
