Steel Toe vs Soft Toe Workboots

I'm renovating a home and need some workboots. I am pretty set on these:

Unless anyone has a better reason for me to get steel toe.

I wear workshoes everyday. Never really considered workboots for actual work since I don't need the ankle support nor the protection on that part of my legs. I also wear steel toed shoes only... had a piece of 2 x 4 fall on my toe once, hurt like hell, and learned my lesson.

Go steel toe. I recommend these but not everyone like the pull on.

With pants on you can't tell they are pull-ons and they are totally waterproof.

Drop one thing on your foot, and you will never show up on the job site again without steel toe. I had a piece of steel I joist roll onto my toe a few years ago, and it ripped the nail/nail bed out of my big toe. I don't see job sites often, however when I am there I make sure to throw my steel toe boots on even if they don't really match my office wear.

If you are doing real work, I would forgo style and get steel toe.

+1

If there is a chance of even a heavy tool falling on your foot go for the steel toe.

And if he were going for style with these... err... I don't know what to tell him.

Honestly I'd spend a lot less money and just get a cheap pair of steel-toes from K-Mart. I wouldn't want that really tall boot you've got there - they'd be nice in the winter time but as we're coming up on summer you'd be miserable. There's no need to go nuts on work boots. $223 is crazy.

Ah, you and your wife share boots? How cute.

Get some man boots.

Thanks-

I'm surprised that anyone would market a boot without a steel toe as a workboot. Steel toes are definitely a necessary safety feature. Good workboots will pay off in peace of mind and let you concentrate on your work, instead of having to watch every step.

You don't need steel toes for renovating a house. Steel toes are for things like iron work. I mean, are you going to bust out the hardhat too?

Really? I do this for a living. I dropped a framing hammer on my foot while wearing gym shoes. The broken toe wasn't very much fun. Never mind what a piece of 5/8 ths fire rock will do to you. Now it's steel toe boots with a puncture resistant foot bed all the time. Yeah it isn't fun looking at a 16 penny nail point peeking at you from the top of your boot. Just another visit to the emergency room and a month of hobbling around. LOL. A hard hat? Still haven't learned that lesson though a staple gun, air nailer and a 2 by 12 should have convinced me otherwise. I guess I just got knocked senseless or I'm just a glutton for punishment.

I dropped a C-clamp on my foot a week ago, believe me it was not pleasant.

I rather like those Redwings, whats the street price on them?

What about ones like this?

+29. $40 for a certified pair is fine.

Well right now I'm wearing tennis shoes, so anything is an improvement. The shoes can be had for $170 if you get them online and cheaper for the shorter boot. The style I picked out is actually their biggest seller. I don't mind paying the higher price because they are made in USA (I have to put my money where my mouth is).

I am still considering the steel toe, and was originally considering them but some people had talked me out of them. Once the house is renovated, I'll be using them for mowing the lawn and working in the shed. I might get those pull on steel toes that someone pointed out because I do hate to tie laces.
