Can a charcoal pinstripe suit pant be worn with a sport coat?

Due to a suit jacket garment mishap, I am in possession of an orphaned pair of charcoal pinstripe suit pants. Being of late eighties vintage when clothes seemed to be cut significantly slimmer than they are today (for the same waist/inseam size), the pants fit wonderfully and I hate to not find some use for them.

My question is whether such a pinstripe pant would be acceptable for wear with say a gray or brown herringbone sport coat, or if I am better off sticking to a solid pant?

IMO if it was grey, maybe, but charcoal, no.

I wouldn't.

No, I'd never do it.

Years ago I destroyed a brand new suit coat, on the second occasion I wore the suit. I tried to have the coat repaired but, was repeatedly informed that such just wouldn't be possible. The suit on sale had cost me $795...my employer reimbursed me $300 for the suit and to further mitigate the $ impact of my loss, I decided to wear the (undamaged trousers) as odd trousers in business casual situations. The trousers were a green/brown Glenn plaid design. I found myself asked on more than one occasion, "are those a pair of suit pants?" or told, that fabric would make a nice suit"! Yes, I did it but, would not recommend anyone else doing so!

Sounds like the Nays have it! Oh well!

What about pairing them with a sweater? I'm no fan of odd pinstriped trou, but I've seen them integrated successfully into a layered look. Think Andre 3000.

I think would would have more luck by taking a couple of snaps of what you have in mind and posting them for comment. I agree that a sweater might work but have trouble imagining the sportcoat looking right. It may be that you have a good idea but I just can't see how it would work.

i would pair a charcoal pinstripe pant with a slim, non structured casual blue/navy blazer. it will work.

Hmmm.... interesting! I was thinking that the one combo that wouldn't work would be with the navy blazer because the pants would be too dark.

I'll try to take photos tonight when I get home and post.

If it looked good to me I'd do it without hesitation. I have probably done it at some point, come to think of it.

Maybe, depends on the overall outfit. Quite easy to do wrong though I think.
