HK mail (USPS)? Nothing.
FedEx/DHL? A lot.

I usually let the pay the import duty if I can choose to pay at check out. The highest rate I paid at of a single item is about 23% (wool/cotton)

For leather products the rate about 9.2% I think. Anyway..

The 100 you paid for the 250 of cloth is not all import duty. They charge you a fee(broker/agent) of doing this.

I wanted to share my experience with End Clothing. So, I bought a Barbour Tokito quilted waxed jacket they had on sale for about $250+$15 shipping. The price was good, since it was all sold out in the States and the regular price was slightly above $600. I was very nervous about import duties+Fedex fees. In the end I did get stung, although not too bad. Duties and fees came out to about $50, almost evenly distributed. So the final price was still a good deal. After I ordered I contacted End Clothing and they said they can do Royal Mail on items waiting less than 4 pounds if you email them right away with your order number after you submit it.

I will soon be getting in a shipment via UPS - I am expecting to get screwed on customs, duties and everything else possible. Will report back when it happens.

Ja, USPS will handle customs without charging a fee.  Contract carriers like FedEx will handle the paperwork and then charge you a broker's fee even if no duty is owed on the shipment.  Otherwise, duties will depend on the country of origin, the value of the goods, and merchandise classification (as some goods as subject to import quotas etc.).

It never hurts to contact your Congressional representatives and tell them that you want larger import exemptions on merchandise for personal consumption.
