Yea, and then you see them get up and walk straight to the bar.

I don't linger to see what they do with the money nor do I really care. If I was in their position I'd probably want to drink myself to oblivion too.

I don't linger either. But if they walk straight to the bar right after I give them money, I get pissed. I would like to think that my money would help them get something to eat.

I usually don't. I'm often surprised by who is doing the begging though, especially when I travel to different cities. Locally there are "regulars" who I've encountered for several years and they are usually middle aged to older individuals. However, in some cities those asking can be quite young and look very able-bodied, I saw this a few days ago in Santa Barbara.

If they tell me they want to buy drugs, cigarettes, or booze, I'll give them a dollar sometimes, but usually I realize that this money can buy me tobacco or booze, so no. If they want food, I certainly won't give it to them. They can usually get that for free from homeless shelters or soup kitchens or whatever. Also, if they are extremely repulsive looking or smell funny, I probably won't give them anything because they'll try to shake my hand and I'll be totally grossed out. :P

I should just tell them, you may have no money, but I have six figures in student debt. Sorry.

Sometimes money, cigarettes and rarely food and in one particularly cold night shelter. Most of the time nothing.

I give them free advice, like "fuck off".

I used to give money away and think I was a good person, but now I never give away free money.

When I gave food before, I felt like I did the right thing. When I gave money before, I felt like I was being used.

Nice to know you're an asshole. You're certainly not required to give anything but please, would you act that way towards someone that wasn't homeless?

Sometimes yes.

Plus beggars in downtown Seattle aren't homeless. Some of them even have iphones they use to coordinate with each other.
