My budget was under $1000 so I had to think really "DIY" about the project. I purchased 5 of these logitech cameras because they include motion detection and can be remotely controlled (including moving the camera's view around the room). I bought a cheap Dell desktop and two USB2 expansion cards (I had to buy 2 because the cameras suck so much power that one card couldn't handle all of the)

The software I used was JaxCam and it worked very well. I programmed it to record video only during certain periods of time. During the rest of the day it took a JPG image every 10 5 seconds and archived it.

If the motion detection was turned on and it caught something it would immediately send a notice to your email, txt your phone and start recording. It would send a followup email with snippits of the video attached.

This would require several long USB cables to run from the cameras to the computer I assume? The one that comes with the camera is only 6' long.

Correct, I had to buy 16ft (i'm pretty sure they were 16ft) extension cables that were rated for USB2.0

I actually mounted the cameras upside down, through the ceiling. I punched holes in the ceiling tile and lowered the neck through the hole, then reattached the camera head. JaxCam included the option to rotate the image 180 degrees so I didn't have to turn my monitor upside down
