Exercises to strength Knee Joints and Legs

Thread Starter
I am an enthusiast runner and will do 2 or 3 times a week a run of 5km (3.1Miles) or 10km(6.2Miles). I am looking for advice on how to strengthen my i) knee joins and ii) strengthen my legs generally so they can handle the pounding of running.

Change your running form. A good deal of knee problems arise from poor form and/or shoes.

Other than that, squats.

This is true. As a side note, I'd also say avoid running on a treadmill as much as possible. When you run on those things a lot your form definitely changes to be most efficient on a machine, not on solid ground.

Bodyweight squats are supposedly very good for strengthening and rehabbing knees. Also, many knee injuries come from hurting the back and not the knees (as someone said about "form" earlier).

So, you're negating everything that's been said in this thread in addition to my post? Do tell... Edit: Squats without weight strenghen knee ligaments, develop endurance, and improve your cardio. Also, poor form when running will effect the knees especially.

Are you purposely being stupid? That's an honest question.

I said (and others have said befor me in this thread) that poor form can hurt the knees and you said, "negative". Poor form hurts the knees. It's really simple so, no, I'm not purposely being stupid. I would like to know how poor form in running doesn't affect one's knees. Also, can you explain how squats (bodyweight or otherwise) don't improve endurance, lung capacity, and ligament strength?

I think he may have been negating what you said about hurting the back being causal in knee injuries and not the poor form part, at least thats how I read it.

Never enjoyed running, it always took too long to get anywhere.

Cycling is good, just make sure you can stand over the top bar of the frame with at least an inch of space between your nads and the bar, and have the seat height set correctly, i.e. sitting on the seat with one peddle all the way down, your leg should be slightly bent at the knee, not straight.
