One of my favorite chefs in ATL left to take over the Oak Room at The Plaza Hotel. Joel Antunes a really good chef here. I saw that he only got one star from the NY times and was wondering if anyone here had dined there since he took over this past fall.

Friends of mine (a couple) dined there in December and enjoyed it. IIRC, the guy especially enjoyed the calamari. Certainly much better than one star, from their description.

From what I've heard from ppl who work there, it's a shit show. Very poorly managed, probably due to the hotel.

The new owners did a nice job restoring the Oak Room to its former glory from a visual perspective - the decor is really great, they've refinished all of the woodwork, etc. The Oak Bar is a perfect place to stop for a (pricey) drink if you're in the neighborhood. But that's where the good news ends; my dinner there was altogether disappointing...bad service, mediocre food, longish wait times, very high prices. If you want to spend that kind of money, have a cocktail in the Oak Bar and head to a better restaurant nearby (Daniel, Jean Georges, any of the offerings in Time Warner Center, etc.).

Check out Bruni's review. Decor good, food bad.

Not since the early 80s.

I never considered actually dining in the Oak Room -- I always considered this one of the perfect spots to begin an evening in NYC, but have never stayed past those first (expensive) cocktails.

The last time was 2002. It will be interesting to go back, but probably just for drinks. There always used to be an interesting blend, perfect for people watching, especially on a hot spring day with a gin and tonic.

Oak room. Any relation to Oak room in Boston Copley Plaza? Is it some sort of good ol American haute cuisine chain?

If it is , then Oak room in Boston is equal in quality to railroad station cafeteria with cocktails to match.

Around $20. Most expensive I've seen was Pentop Bar on the roof of the Peninsula ($25, I think)
