Valentine's Day tactics and money moves

I find myself this year in a relationship that i actually enjoy for the first time in years which makes Valentine's Day slightly less dreadful than in years gone by. Because it's Saturday, the blessed holiday takes on new meaning and shape as i have a whole day to celebrate my lady. We've decided that I'm going to do lunch for us at my place; we'll do "something" in the late afternoon; and she's making dinner in the evening. I plan on sending flowers in the morning. We've (or i should say, She's) decided that we're going to exchange gifts. I'm not clear exactly on what i'm going to get her. I was hoping that some of you could share your plans or classic romantic moves from the past, as a way of helping us all get through the holiday. There's a whole lot of February 14th to get through this year.

The best one I ever had - in 2005, I loaded up my girl and kayaked out to an undeveloped barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico. It was awesome to be on a beach in Florida and have nothing but wilderness around you.

Anyway, I packed wine, tent, dinner, a smoker bag, a sleeping bag (singular), and kindling. We watched the sunset, drank the wine by the fire and ate smoked salmon, and had a bunch of sex. Great time. Ignored the tent and slept right on the beach. Woke up to the sunrise, more sex, paddled home.

She talked about it for weeks.

Is it generally understood that Valentine's Day is all about the girl or are some of you in relationships where it truly is a couples day?

Not if you are a heavy proponent of March 14th, aka Steak and Blowjob day.

You know, it's tough to outdo something like that. I almost want to say you may not want to do something that great too early on.....it's hard to follow up on that the following year.

V-Day is bullshit. I take it as any other day, and so does my girlfriend.

eeeh, yes and no. If a girl bought herself lingerie and called it my Xmas gift, that would be crap. If she bought lingerie and called it my V-day gift, it somehow seems OK. So in some ways I do see it being more about the girl. This year I think I'm going to sign us up for a "couple's massage class" at a spa. It seems to be a gift both of us will take advantage of.

...perfect opportunity for a gay SF member to chime in on how a male/male couple treats V-Day!

There's some definite truth to that. But if you enjoy the girl, and she's open-minded, you can usually think of stuff. The next Valentine's Day I took her to a bed-and-breakfast in SW Virginia. There's a huge park there that has wild ponies and beautiful mountain vistas.

Girls have some weird love affair with horses, so I figured this would be a pretty good move. We hiked in the snow (which is always a treat for Floridians) and hung out with the ponies. She loved it.

Valentine's Day, in my opinion, isn't about guys, at least for me. Hell, I don't even celebrate my own birthday and have spent the last four Thanksgivings studying for various exams. Aside from Christmas, I really don't care about holidays.

From a strictly transactional, unsentimental viewpoint, you still come out ahead. Usually, your happiness is partly dependent upon your partner's. So, if she's happy, you're happy. The concomitant increase in both the frequency and variety of sex will make you even happier. Additionally, she'll raise your social standing by talking you up to her peers.

And hell, if ya love the girl, who cares?
