I ate with an adult US girl. I was very funny = i never saw an adult girl eating like that She spread mustard on a slice of bread and made a kind of sandwich in which she put what was in her plate. She wasn't able to eat bread without making a sandwich and wasn't capable to use a fork and eat normaly. She had to make this circus with mustard and make a sandwich. It is normal in US. Do all people eat like that ?

Of course, Ernest. We all spread mustard on a slice of bread to make a sort of sandwich with what is on our plates. We aren't able to eat bread and use a fork without doing that circus, either. This is completely normal in the U.S.

Sure it is normal. Just like it is normal in Paris to go days without a shower.

E: are you talking about the way Americans sometimes switch the fork from one hand to the other (& then putting down knife onto plate) when cutting and then eating food? H.

I resist poking fun at ernest, because his English is certainly better than my French. But sometimes, it is really quite hard to resist.

No, i was talking about people who don't use any fork but use the food that is in their plate and 2 slices of bread (in which they spread mustard) to make a sandwich .

Oh yeah, I do that all the time. Only with mustard and ketchup.

I think it depends on what one is eating.

Bread and mustard.

I would assume that there would have been other things there as well. Hence she "made a sandwich"

Give it out, Ernest, where were you eating, and what exactly was ordered? Hate to stress that again, but do travel a little bit. Even to Brittany or Normandy. I promise, the cows won't bite. There are different sets of etiquette in France and the US when it comes to table manners. And then there are those who don't know what the word etiquette means.

The girl was not from the countryside.

It also depends on the context. If I was given a plate with two pieces of bread, some lettuce, tomatoes and some pieces of meat, I would only assume that I am supposed to make a sandwich out of it. Mustard goes great on sandwiches.
