First Jantzen shirt (critique of fit sought)

Firstly, the ordering process:

Ordered: January 12th
Acknowledgement of order via e-mail: January 17th
Credit card billed: January 30th
Arrived via mail (Canada): February 3rd

And that's with Ricky being closed for Chinese New Year from January 26th - February 9th!

Secondly, the fit (note: the shirt has not been ironed). What do you guys think (ignoring my gut, double chin and need of a haircut)?

In particular, I'm wondering: (1) do I need more waist supression, or is it my gut that's hanging out vs. the shirt, (2) the sleeves I think are clearly too short, or is my jacket too long?, (3) Is the collar too high/long?

Additional comments/critiques are welcome of course.

What possibly made me think to myself before posting on this forum "no one will notice the jeans"?! ;-) My wife first commented on them as she took the picture. I said just take the picture...no one will care about the jeans but her. Ooops. She then went on to point out--after seeing the pictures--my double chin, lack of ass, need of a haircut, soft belly, etc., etc., etc. At that point, the jeans were the least of my concerns!

Ok so ignoring the jeans ...

Actually I think the fit is pretty good. Yes I'd probably take the waist in an inch or so. In terms of the sleeves, is it possible the cuff is just too small? Seems that there's bunched fabric at the wrist but the reason it's not falling a little more is that cuff? Collar looks fine to me (maybe a little tight?), as does the shoulder and chest. Overall, especially given Jantzen's prices, a decent result!

Also: have you washed it yet? It will shrink a bit if not. Better to judge the fit after it's been laundered a couple of times.

seems like your shirt needs to be tapered a bit in the torso.

The shoulder looks ok, but there's a bit of extra fabric around the waist.

Looks like a good first shirt to me. The second picture clearly shows some of the extra material around the waist that you would want to have fixed on the next order. Other than that it looks alright.

What material did you use? Any thoughts? Also what fit did you select (Medium, Form)?

The sleeves aren't too short. It's the cuffs that are too tight on your wrists.

May I suggest.... a couple of cycles of ...wash/iron or launder the shirt...wear the shirt...
Then wear it again and lets re-evaluate fit. I know its nice to wear a fresh shirt and get opinions, but the sleeves/collar etc will shrink and so on..and the fabrics Jantzen uses are usually shrinkers!!

Regards.

Boy you guys are good. Thanks for the feedback!

ANSWERS:

1) I ordered a "Form" fit (4"-6" of clearance) and made a note that I would like a "fairly slim fit" (don't know if my note had any impact). I also sent pictures of me in another dress shirt.

2) Fabric choice was #8251 (Blue Superior).

3) The material was OK. I usually order from Maxwell's (Canadians would probably know them) and I would say it is about on par with Maxwell's "upgraded" fabrics. Nothing particularly special, but nice enough (and what you would expect for the price). That said, I found the quality of the construction and attention to detail appears superior to Maxwell's.

4) To give you a better sense of some of the details, I've attached a few photos showing the MOP buttons, the pink gusset triangle and the button holes (all of which seem to have a lot of loose threads--something I didn't notice with Maxwell's).

5) I have not washed the shirt. Of course, that now makes perfect sense. I will wash, press and wear 3 times before adjusting the measurements (and will post back here with suit pants on).

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS

6) Great point about the sleeves. I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. I assume I would just increase my "wrist size" on the order form?

7) You're also right that the collar is too tight--I'm not sure what I was thinking. I will re-measure after washing a few times.

8) I will also pull in the waist a little bit. An inch was mentioned. Would you try a little more (it looks a little sloppy now, but I'm worried it will be form fitted against my spare tire if I go too tight)? Again, I assume I just reduce the "waist/belly" measurement to increase the taper? Would I pull the "hip" in as well? Say, 2" in the waist and 1" in the hip? Or is 2" too much to pull in?

9) I didn't notice the option for the "Sleeves **** Extra Button" and, thus, didn't get one (see 4th picture). I'm assuming that is something I should be getting for a cleaner look?

10) Is there too much collar showing on the back of my jacket?

11) The consensus is that the shoulders are good, but looking again at the pictures I see I have gimped up, sloping shoulders (the right more than the left). Anything I can do about that to compensate (absent surgery) or should I just leave well enough alone?

Thanks again you guys. If there is anything about the shirt you want a picture of, or any other details, let me know.

Suggest that after you wash and iron, put the shirt back on (jeans or slacks doesn't matter), and take some pics for Ricky to see. I don't think you have gimpy shoulders...

....it just looks like your arms are half held up in some of the pictures and you're not standing straight facing the camera. Or maybe its the wide angle lens thats distorting you.

Are you wearing a watch under your cuff? If you open the cuff up, the sleeve may end up too long, as it looks like there's a lot of extra material at the wrist.

If you want a more fitted body, you can try a flat split yoke back instead of the pleats....that gets rid of some of the extra cloth and looks neater.

Interested in hearing peoples opinion on this as well.

What # collar did you order?

The fit looks decent.

Shoulders could be smaller IMO. The seams hang a bit. If you change this, lenghten sleeves accordingly.

Cuffs are to small. With my second order with Jantzen I changed the measurement shoulder to pit, by asking for an extra inch (which was to much). He followed that instruction perfectly, so that is an option (for the cuffs).

It seems you ordered the side pleats. I'm sure it is not necessary tailor wise but I guess with Jantzen this leads to extra fabric around the waist. Perhaps you should ditch the side pleats or just ask for a smaller waist. Or (and I have no experience with this) ask for darts in the (lower) back. I've read he does this on request.

Toss the jeans and ask your wife to spare your feelings next time.

For a first shirt,it looks pretty good.
how did you come up with measurments.

starting from the top.

once that collar is washed a few times , it will be to tight. add 1/2" the shape is nice.

Your left sshoulder seems to be shorter then the right.
not sure if they can split the yoke and give you different measurements. left shoulder could be
1/2" shorter. right is fine.
If you want a bit more taper, take in the waist an inch or two, add some darts as well.
the chest could be taken if, but I perfer comfort in the chest area.

Sleeves actually seem ok in length. three washes will determine. the cuffs seem fine in size. they just look stiff. jacket sleeves are a touch long.

Looking for a fit critique on my first Jantzen shirt. I goofed a bit and made the collar too small so it will barely do up, anyone know how much these are expected to shrink after washing?

Also I'm not sure if the sleeves are too tapered? When I do move my arm the cuff tends to slide away from my wrist a bit.

Any and all comments welcome!

yaletownguy - just wanted to comment that this is basically a perfect Jantzen thread. You provided good pics in your initial post, received quality comments from several members, followed up on these comments by answering common questions about fit, fabric and collar and posting pictures of shirt details. Nice job. Be sure to post again after washing/ironing and let us know how the second order goes!
