When someone asks you about something you are wearing. And what it cost and where you got it etc.

Usually I just tell them the truth and sound like a cheap skate because I like to find great deals. Or I just lie and say I don't know. I don't like either of those ways in which I handle it.

What is your reply when you don't want to talk about it?

If anybody asks about what I paid, I answer that I stole it.

i usually tell people that i thrifted it, whether or not it's true. if it doesn't work (like for new shoes), i'll say i got them off ebay. if they ask for the brand, i'll tell them "some weird random brand." if they keep pressing, i'll ask them "have you heard of (insert brand name)?" then proceed to tell them about it when they say "no."

Really depends on who's asking and why. If the person asking is genuinely interested, I have no problem telling them. Otherwise I just say that actually it's none of their business, but if they must know, the item wasn't exactly cheap/ I got a good deal on it/ whatever.

Usually I just say I got the sutff on sale or that I ordered it cheap online, which is true most of the time. I prefer not to put specific numbers on how much things costs, unless someone is asking because they are looking to get something similar. It depends on who I'm talking to though, but I try not to seem snobbish or patronizing because I can afford stuff others may not. And even if they can afford it, many just think it's a waste of money or the wrong thing to spend their money of, which is fine, as long as they don't lecture me about it..

Is it? If I see someone wearing a nice pair of shoes or a nice item of clothing, I would like to know if it's within my price range or not. Asking the price, or at least the brand, is often the only way to find out,

Doesn't have to be. You might frame the question:

"May I ask you a personal question? I really admire those shoes, wuold you mind telling me where you got them, ballpark price?"

The other person can always politely decline price discussions.

Seems the art of polite discourse is lost more than that of bespoke clothing.

I think you guys are way overreacting like the person's trying to interrogate you or something. I've asked people about something they're wearing plenty of times. Take it as a compliment!

What I'm saying is:
1. I think what you're wearing looks good
2. Where can I get it?
3. How much should I expect to pay for it (ie is the one you're wearing possible for me to afford, or do you know of a cheaper way to get it?)

I am also good at getting good qualtiy clothes at good prices, but i often lie sometimes and tell people what I should have paid for somethng instead of what I actually did to make myself sound more important then I actually am.

How do I politley decline a price conversation?
Maybe say something vague like "Oh If told you (how much I paid for_____) I am afraid you might lose respect for me." They can interpret what they may.

I think I will need to make up a totally unbelievable story to make myself sound cooler than I am. Something like, "Oh these shoes, I found them in the closet in my timeshare in southern france." or
"Ya I love this shirt, my uncle Baron Von Weinerschnitzel gave it to me on our trip to Nurburgring to test his GT3"...and so forth.
