By canon, I mean it like in the sense of "canon of classic books" etc.. like where there is a certain set of books that everyone should read etc..

but I mean it in the sense are there only certain brands you will buy?

I like to do this with a lot of things in my life, it makes things easier so I don't have to go researching 1000s of different things. I guess you could also call it brand loyalty.

I like Nike shoes (including Converse), Levi jeans, Oakley sunglasses.. not much else though is canon

Well you have to give new and different things a shot now don't you? How else would you know what you like, what fits your tastes, etc.

Unless you're Kodiak or something and dressed by the internets...

i feel like there should be a one or two week period between joining and posting and one of the days should be one where you can only read the what are you wearing today and the recent purchases thread.

and to answer your question, i think the sf "canon" is alternative apparel, chucks (i believe is a separate company from nike; although many ppl here dont like them because they're quite uncomfortable -> good alternative is spring court (personally recommended) and superga), japanese repro denim (kicking mule workshop, samurai, full count, eternal, sda, etc. do some research on this board and on superfuture and i'm sure you'll find something you like), APC, Wings and Horns/Spruce/Reigning Champ, Moscot, Oliver Peoples, Jack Spade, Porter, Filson, Pendleton, Alden, Red Wing, Danner, Engineered Garments, Woollen Woolrich Mills, Nice Collective, Rag and Bone, Opening Ceremony, Rogan, Mister Freedom, Nom de Guerre (personal favorite), 45 rpm (also personal favorite but can't afford), Visvim, the various research (Naval Research, Mountain Research, etc.), Band of Outsiders, Arrow Mocassins, Quoddy (both high quality alternative to sperry, ll bean, and sebago), I could go on forever. -_- and then there's designer like raf simons, ann demelleiafm;aowijfaemeuster, helmet lang, yohji yamamoto, patrick ervell, tim hamilton, robert geller, dries van noten, etc, and wacko designer stuff like jeremy scott and van beirendonck and raf simons and goth ninja stuff like julius, damir doma, and raf simons (there is some overlap there).

and that's just on this sub forum. on the men's clothing forum you can really lose yourself in men's shoemakers like edward green, john lobb, vass, florsheim, church, crockett and jones, men's suitmakers, thom browne!!, ralph lauren purple, ralph lauren black, thick as thieves is a board started and board favorite "bespoke" company, kiton, brioni, various italian labels who are too numerous to mention, men's shirts like turnbull and asser, men's watches, panerai, iwc, blah blah. Then there are bespoke makers for shoes, suits (the most famous being the several on savile row), shirts, watches, and there are companies that sell all three as ready to wear like paul smith (who has a lot of fans on this board).

I could go honestly go forever and I really don't know much about anything. But I think what you will find is that most people on this board that have been around prefer clothing that is well fitting, subtle in design and details, extremely well thought out and well constructed, and especially from brands that either have a real history or really strive to provide the best quality products for their customers. On the other hand most people tend to eschew flamboyant anything (although a little bling with drab done interestingly and refreshingly is liked quite a bit). Usually that means no embroidering, no branding, no flamboyant colors, no graffiti or obnoxious art on the clothes. People shouldn't notice the clothes, they should notice you.

If you want the basic uniform with minimal money people always quote chucks, APC denim, american apparel t-shirts (although if alternative apparel if you live in la, or uniqlo and muji if in NYC, merona and hanes in target are perfectly acceptable alternatives), and you can also expand from there (next step would be MJK undies which are an absolute must if you treasure your descendants).

Spend a little time reading (like the stickies which are available and stickied for the newcomers). There's a lot to read up on.

Respect for Achewood haha And no, I dont' have any preferred brands. I am pretty new to the game and make an effort to try out as many different brands as I possibly can. And Oakley sunglasses are terrible.

Yeah not completely inflexible but usually it's just easier, more comforting to stick within a comfort zone for consistancy and what not..

Probably:
Chucks, preferably black
RL polo
501's even if you prefer selvedge raw jeans like me
Maybe an AA tee
Some kind of Air Jordan at some point
Topsiders
Either Aviators or Wayfarers. I prefer Aviators though.

I'm already used to the idea of EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN being "terrible" in the eyes of everyone on this forum but Oakleys are actually EXCELLENT sunglasses.

They don't look excellent.

If you look at some of the WAYWT posts, you'll see that a lot of people are set in their ways and always wear similar brands or similar styles. However it's always good to try new things and with so many companies that make clothing, there's no reason not to.

Looks aren't always important though ya know, even in sunglasses?

If you're looking for a sporty set of sunglasses you can't get a pair with better optical clarity, lens durability/flexability and frame durability. I don't think I could break em if I tried.

Their fashion lines are pretty dog ugly, I'm referring to the sporty stuff only like the jackets and what not.

This canon stuff for me is usually for stuff I would wear everyday, shoes, jeans, sunglasses etc. Stuff like tshirts it doesn't matter to me.

i think the idea of sporty sunglasses is pretty undesirable for everyday non sporty use. if you went rock climbing in the adirondacks in june then yes oakley would be preferred. but for every day use oliver people, mosley tribe (same company) moscot, bausch and lombe ray ban, are standard, understated, yet well constructed and elegant options.

I'd say for fashion I guess RayBans would work for me. I have a pair from my dad that are excellent style..

well if you read this forum daily for a week or two you will notice how everyday a couple of noobs will post similar questions in similar threads to what you have posted (there are already three threads posted in the past day that ask pretty much what you have asked). and people get tired of answering the same things over and over and over again. there really is no value for us in telling you what any noob who spends a week reading the encyclopedia and the wawyt would find out anyways. it's only really because either we're very nice people or just can't find the will to go to sleep on a sunday night.

and you spew weak hate.

I"m not asking a question like "Give me advice on what to wear" I'm just starting a discussion. I could care less if people answer honestly.

I think if people ENJOY replying to threads, they should do it, if not, just leave it alone. Not brain science
