Hemming Jeans in NYC?

45rpm will do it, but it's not in Queens.

45 rpm will do it for a lot of money I'm sure. Any tailor should be able to do it really, and for ten dollars or less. If yours can't, go to the one next door, or the one next to that. Really, it's not like this is a rare request or an especially hard task. Dan

Actually I've heard that 45rpm does it for $10. They're not overpricing bastards, they just charge a lot for their products because they put in a lot.

45rpm will chain stitch your hems. That's the main difference between them and a regular tailor. Very few places have chain stitching machines - and that includes jeans factories. If chainstitching is important to you, then it's worth it. If not, then get them hemmed anywhere.

Many tailors here in the city, still do not understand what an original hem is, even if they say they know what it is and how do correctly do it. What I would do (depending on the cost of the hem) is bring in an old pair of jeans, or maybe buy some cheap jeans from Target and do a test drive. Nothing worse than the tailor screwing up a pair of $150 jeans......

My GF brought her 7 and humanity jeans to the tailor. He did not use the original hem and they turned out perfect. I think you need to alter them as soon as you buy them. Once you hem them they can wear properly with the rest of the jeans. Her jeans look like they came from the factory.

I had my wife's James and Seven jeans done at Dynasty Tailors on 38th between 5th and Madison, using the original hem. Quite well done. -s

What does that mean exactly? The original hem?

I've had jeans awhile ago with "original hems" and they just don't lay right. It puckers a bit or something. Not worth the extra money either.

thats for a cut hem, not sure how much a california hem costs

My true religions I had done last year at denim doctors in LA does that after a wash. Nothing more annoying than the edge of the cuffs curling up after a wash, don't think it was worth the price I paid to have them hemmed.

definitely go to 45rpm and get them chainstitched.

Any tailor can "lock stitch" jeans and a lot of tailors can California or Original hem (chop off the bottom and reattach it higher) but lock stitching makes a hem that doesn't "rope" and won't be spot on to the original and doing a california hem never looks or hangs right.

If you get the bottom chainstitched, provided you haven't already washed your jeans a bunch dip the hems in water and it will "rope" a bit when it dries. After that, that area gets enough wear that it will match the fading of the rest of your jeans after a short period.

I took two pairs of jeans to 45 rpm, one Sorahiko and one SD-103, this past Saturday at 4:45PM, they were ready for me in less than an hour!
