I guess nobody will ever do a favor for that "magazine" again.

Smoking is one of the biggest vices among Olympic athletes. Usain Bolt was a surprising success story for his coaches who thought his constant partying would keep him from winning.

Do you own him or something? Does he owe you something? Is he not a private citizen allowed to do whatever the fuck he wants? I'm sure that wasn't the first time he smoked weed and I really doubt it is 'messing up' his training.

+1 on this, too. I mean, really, I don't get the people who think that smoking some pot is equivalent to huffing gas or something.

I mean, it seems to me that alcohol is a lot worse; besides mellowing out and relaxing... what in the world does pot do? Okay, maybe he'll get the munchies and gain 20 pounds, but aside from that...

At the rate that he burns calories, and given his 12k cal a day diet during peak training I seriously doubt it.

Many top, amazing athletes smoke quite a bit of weed and it really doesn't ruin their performance. America needs to grow the fuck up and stop demonizing people who have a little bit of fun. I view people who criticize pot smokers with as much scorn and derision as I do homophobes, social issue republicans, and all those douchebags who wear maroon shirts with black ties or black shirts with maroon ties at 'formal' events.

Exactly. You are right; we as a society/culture/whatever have an infantile maturity when it comes to this stuff. Also, no doubt it is a lot of "moralistic" religious people getting up in arms about this stuff. WWJD? Well, I think he already told us... take the log out of your eye before criticizing the speck in somebody else's. This kid worked his ass off and did something nobody in the history of sports has done. Let him smoke pot, let him bang 15 Thai hookers at once, let him eat one of those "Six Dollar" burgers at Hardees, if he'd like. Better let him relax and enjoy himself than turn him into a neurotic psycho by the time he is 30 who lives behind a walled compound in southern California and raves and rants about "THE JEWS!!!!" 12K calories a day? Damn....

He's just an idiot. I really don't care... a little recreational bong use never hurt anyone. But that was a $1 million bong hit.

Swimming is not the kind of sport people continue to care about after the Olympics are over. So his mainstream sponsorship opportunities are somewhat limited by his sport. That means he's got to find a niche, and the place where he remains highly relevant is in the swimming world or amongst population groups that are really into swimming and the Olympics. That pretty much means kids and parents of kids. Having already been caught once in an embarrassing personal situation, he really should have known better.

Agreed. Ideally, it would show kids that even world champion athletes have shown that 'drug' use in moderation is fine.

Then again, he's working within the constraints of his business field, and he knew something like this would be detrimental to his image; and image is huge in athletics. He shouldn't have allowed himself to be photographed. He was stupid.

Then again, it's sad that it should even matter.

Eh.

And once more Americans lose about 100lbs and start reading books besides the Bible, that is PRECISELY what they'd take away from that. This wouldn't have even made the news in Europe.

Yeah, I don't care either. But Phelps cost himself a bunch of money. I'd guess the endorsement deals will be vaporizing as fast as that weed did.

Which athletes were these? The only person I know of that ws involved with something of the sort was Ross Rebagliati, and he got the medal back.

Have you ever won 8 Olympic gold medals??

Have you ever won 8 Olympic gold medals....on weed??

He claimed he did not touch a pool for months after the Olympics. This might still be happening. There is nothing you can do to top 8 golds in one olympics. What's he gonna do? Win 9? I doubt he ever intended to train for 2012. That said, he lost some money with this pic, perhaps about $1-2 million. But it's not like he ever had to work again anyway. He is set for life regardless. He is a moron though. Any time someone takes a pic of you doing something illegal, you should go chase that monkey down.
