It takes the chefs years of training to be able to safely remove it without leaving any poison, if they left it on the plate people would be dropping dead all over the place...

I agree. Whale doesn`t really taste like fish though, and isn`t really difficult prepare. Blowfish is not all about the actual taste of the fish. You kinda have to know what you are experiencing in order to appreciate.

One if the thing I regret missing the most. Tony Bourdain tried it in one of his his episodes for Travel channel; if I recall it correctly, he was pretty impressed.

I don't downplay things just to be cool. I like to try different foods and was disappointed with my fugu exprience. On the other hand, I paid $10 for a cup of kopi luwak last week and loved it. I'd probably try it again at that price.

hmmmm...

I think it tastes something like horse (or a beef-like meat) rather than fish. If you ate it for the first time without knowing it was whale, you would probably think it was something that walks on land, rather than swimming in the ocean. Technically since they are mammals, I guess that makes sense.

While searching YouTube for blowfish videos, I ran across this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCvO9rInXmo Fast forward to 1:26. Any comments? I don't speak Japanese, so I couldn't understand what the chef was saying. Does the fish regenerate the muscle that is sliced off or what?

No, its like a "Jackass" prank comedy bit. That fish is a goner. Not immediately of course, its likely in shock - but it won't really survive. I posted that here a while ago.

+1, The first time I had whale katsu (really good whale katsu in Shinjuku) I thought it tasted like really really tender beef. Its tender to the point of almost flaky fish like texture but very strong mammal taste. I should mention I have had crappy whale katsu too. It was cut in these thin wafer slices then fried, it was way dry and shitty. The kind I had in Shinjuku was big chunks.

What wine goes well with blowfish? Aussie Syrah?

Totally unremarkable. Bland, uninteresting.... a stupid parlor trick.
