There's also the French version, BCBG: bon chic, bon genre. I dug a book out of my closet "Les mouvements de mode expliques aux parents" which dates from the same decade, at least, as the Preppy and Sloane Ranger handbook. Â The men wear: Horned rimmed glasses, spread collars, thin cashmere ties under a lamswool v-neck sweater, a Harris tweed jacket, pleated flannel pants, Church punch-hole shoes. Â The book specifies Churches. Â All this with a green loden coat. Â He went to Sciences Po. Or they wear: A silk ascot with black and beige stripes, the shirt open, a tweed jacket with a ticket pocket and leather patches handed down by an uncle, worn thin-whale cords and Fenestrier shoes of no discernible color. (I think that last one is right; my French isn't quite up to that one.) Â He carries a battered soft-leather briefcase that looks like it was caught under a rhino stampede.
