The values of a Gentleman

Thread Starter
Good day to all you fellow forum fans...

I'm quite sure there are those of you out there who consider themselves to be a Gentleman.

But would you see us as being a species on the brink of extinction? Are there those amongst the populations who have decided that the image of the Gentleman is nothing more than top-hats and frock-coats, tweed suits, aristicratic lunatics who have more money than sense and wear their noses so high, they'll have to duck to avoid colliding with any Airbus passing overhead?

But instead, are we perhaps, kind, considerate, polished manners, well dressed, think of others before ourselves, will escort an old lady over the road, dashing, principles and values are our religion, etc, etc, etc.

So, are you a Gentleman and if so what do you consider as being the mark of a Gentleman? Also, in what light do you think the ladies see us in ???

Open to the forum.

Regards,

V_B

A gentleman shall never hail a lady from a barracks window.

I think most people confuse being a gentleman with having money. But o me, money is much more important because you can use it to buy class, whereas class won't help you get money.

I liked what Brandon Frasier said in "Blast from the past" - a gentleman (or lady) is someone who make sure the people around them are comfortable.

Just a slight point, you can not, I believe, be an Esq. and a gent. They are obviosly both gentlemen but they are separate social distinctions, I know everyone is Esq. on their bank statements etc. but it really means you tick of various criteria (minimum land ownership, a degree from one of the great university's, good family etc.) whilst a gent is one of gentle family who has no claim to another title, including Esq.

if we are being all old schooly English gentlemanly

As for Gentlemanly values what about a sense of fair play? that seems to be missing from the list

When I think gentleman, I think "knows how to be classy." You just don't see many classy guys these days. When's the last time you heard someone say, "He's real classy"? You don't, cause there ain't enough classy people. So I try real hard to be classy. Stay classy, baby.

The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.
