Like self checkout at the grocery store, except at the fast food store?

That touch screen must be filthy.

I've always wanted a cross between an automat and a McDonalds for fast-food. Ordering seems to be the weakest link in their operation, and is usually a pain.

They had a blirb in fast food nation about how automated burger machines were made for unmanned locations, but never worked out for one reason or another. I bet they could be pulled off today though.

wait. a person still has to get the food you ordered and put it on your tray, right? and usually that person knows how to punch the item on the cash register, right?

No, they often don't seem to be able to do this. Maybe things will improve now that McDonalds is hiring highly educated former investment bankers, though.

Wawa (gas station/convenience store) uses them for ordering sandwiches. Work pretty well. Haven't seem them elsewhere yet. I know that McDonalds had also thought about outsourcing the drive-thru order taker to India and then having the order shot via teh Interwebs back to the store for prep, but I think the technical issues overwhelmed them.

Same as Sheetz does around here. Seems to work out pretty well for them aside from the occasional technologically-challenged person who can't figure out how to use it.

There was an Arby's around here which had video touch screens from the late 80s. They never really worked well and they were removed around 2000. Then the Arby's shut down.

In the Mid-90's, I used to go to a Taco Bell in Boulder, CO that had a touch screen order kiosk. I guess it must have been a prototype, because I never saw it implemented anywhere else.

Or then again, I probably have not been to a Taco Bell since the mid-90's

There was a McDonald's outside of Philly that was automated sometime in the early 90's. I went there once as a kid and thought it was pretty fuck'n cool. The experiment failed though. WAWA does it. It's not a bad idea since the tech is much improved, cheaper and more reliable. IE: Bullet-proof high-impact multi-touch touch screen, just what that the Philly-area McDonalds' needs!

Weird, I actually saw the kiosk once at a Taco Bell (in a different state) in the '90s. I had forgotten all about it -- haven't seen another one since.
